I use my lovely brylcreem...its available in lots of varieties...wet look, total control and what have you. I like it. But if your prone to spots its not the best.

I use bog standard hair gel but don't like the shiny/greasy look I sometimes get, and want a more spiky dry look with my hair. Can anyone recommend a particular brand, just not something too obscure (ie hard to find) /expensive for me please? Thanks

You should use Wella Crackle Wax, its pretty good but a bit pricey....

Try osmo essence wax clay. It's salon stuff and you can get it for under a fiver on ebay. I've tried alot of clay before and that's probably the best of the bunch.

NOTE: don't over-apply or you end up looking greasy.

Anything that says matt as a general rule of thumb will give you a dry look. I like the bright green d:fi but thats probably a bit pricey for you, i also like toni&guy matt paste but that might also be a bit pricey for you, one of the v05 ones gives you the effect your looking for but i can't remember which one, think its fibre putty, just make sure your hairs dry when you put it on.

Alterinatively get Fudge Hair Shaper, which also smells nice.
Mix this with this and you will get exactly what you want.

The gel has an extremely strong & dry hold, and the wax gives a bit of shine without making your hair look greasy. If you use the gel on its own, it makes it look really dry-looking and brittle, but combined with the wax it's perfect.

Thanks for the recommendations - I bought a pot of American Crew Fibre from New York which I'll try out tomorrow
A quick tip - to avoid any clumping, put the pot under the hair dryer to soften the wax up so you get an even spread.
