Hi, can someone help me understand the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of sampling.

Self - Report:
Volunteer/self selecting:
+
-

Opportunity sampling
+
-

Random
+
-

Quota/ Stratified
+
-

Snowball(If it counts??)

Observation:
Event sampling
+
-

Time sampling
+
-

That's all the different types I can think of. Thanks in advance

opportunity, + be able to use participants available at the time, - unrepresentative of whole population,
self report + gain rich qualitative data that is able to be used to deter min what causes the outcomes -, possible for p's to give into social desirability bias and therefore lie in their answers to paint themselves in a better light. Event + use coding schemes so less behaviors will be missed -, if too many behaviors are occurring at once it would be difficult to record everything. Time + Rich in data and focus on more than one type of behavior, - some behaviors will be missed and so the observation may not be representative. Random + can be used on large sample populations - can be unrepresentative if large areas are not hit by the random number generator.
