2 questions:

do many people take laptops into lectures and things? i can type so much faster than i can write, surely it'd be easier to take a laptop in?

also can you take bottles of water and stuff into lectures etc? i'd hate to be stuck in a hall for 2 hours with no water
You can take anything into our lecture theatre however i've never seen anyone with a laptop, bottled water is handy though. However some places dont allow food or drink.

Oh, I'm tempted to take a palmtop in instead of a notebook, like you i can type faster than I can write.

For lectures where it's better to listen than to write, a dictaphone isn't a bad idea.

I was tempted to buy a dictaphone that I could plug into my computer until I realised that I don't need to take any notes in lectures anyway.

Some people bring laptops to my tutorials cant see a problem with it.

Laptops are fine though it annoys people as its a bit show offy. PDA's are far better and it what I use as well as pen and paper.

Also my university dosn't allow food or drink but nobody gives a toss so people even eat thoir dinner at computers!

Yes that is a good idea - maybe you could place it next to the lecturer.

I've known lecturers object to tippy tappy typing noises and to a row of dictaphones on the front row.

If you're a slow writer then do your best to follow the lecture then ask for a copy of the lecturers notes - they wont usually mind. You can then anotate the notes with any different information and do a bit of reading around the subject if need be.

You can get really good dictaphones now that have an amazing range on them, so you can have it sat next to you rather than on dictophone row. I have one for work, whichI'll take to lectures with me next year.

When I did my first degree dictaphones were so shite they were banned - you would have to hold it just below the lecturers mouth to pick anything up!

that's what i was wondering about - do lecturers mind?

it's not that i'm a slow writer it's just that my writing's so illegible and i'm having such problems trying to revise from my notes from the last year. it's the same when i write slowly (obviously just have stupid hands  ).

Don't go to lectures. Read books.
ive never seen anyone in any of my lectures with anything technical...but then i do maths..so a lot of it is technical and pictures...which is quite hard/time consuming on a computer.

were not allowed food/drinks but we all ignore it.

Never seen anyone with a laptop or dictaphone thingamy in my lectures. Food and drink is supposed to be banned but even the lecturers ignore the signs!

I have quite often dozed off in lectures, and am now of the opinion that if you are so tired that you'll fall asleep then there's no point going - have an extra hour in bed and catch up the work later. You'll feel better for it in the long run.

I've only seen someone with a laptop in one of my lectures.. and they were playing Minesweeper :/.

I've used a lap top with 'inspiration' software because I'm dyslexic but I find it better to have a note taker so I can just concentrate on the lecture.

If you have a some kind of condition which makes it difficult to take notes it's possible the uni might be able to do something for you about it. Here at Essex most lectures are recored by teaching services and copies are given to anyone who has is unable to take notes (but sadly not to people who skive lectures) I think they also offer note takers as well.

I think you can take anything into lectures - many people take water, coffee etc and I've seen a few with laptops, though i think the people who have them use them for playing games in lectures.

I also remember one occasion where someone came into the lecture with a bag of golf clubs...

Lol, out of interest - some of you were suggesting PDAs/palmtops, which ones do you mean and do you know of any that have decent keyboards?
I'm almost going to uni soon in 2005 or 2006 (havn't decided yet). I would bring a laptop to lectures, so I can revise from the notes clearly and stuff like that. So the notes you typed are neat and organised. I wouldn't bring a recording device, as maybe the lecturer speaks to fast or doesn't speak properly. Also it's a waste of money to buy tapes.
