    If you worked it out on the principle of 2, 8, 8, 8, 8 you get 3 outer shell electrons
    I completely forgot that after the third orbital 8 is no longer the maximum

    It's aluminium oxide, not bauxite, bauxite is the ore and has lots of impurities that have to be removed before electrolysis so it isn't bauxite.
