Can someone explain the protests to me? An AV referendum was held 4 years ago and it was rejected. Now the Tories have won a very clear majority and whether someone agrees with their policies or not their legitimacy is bulletproof. So, why is it that people think it's ok to riot because they didn't get what they wanted? If that's how it works why don't we all wear the crests of our parties and club each other in the street until last man standing?

They're mindless thugs who are lashing out because they didn't get what they wanted. That's literally it.

Imagine if I went out and start kicking everyone because UKIP didn't win :daydreaming:

I don't get it either. If anything, these protests are enforcing conservative stereotypes about labour voters.

I think there's a lot of generalising here. Yes they're atrocious apes, but I'm pretty sure if Labour won then there'd be some similar outcry from Tory voters.

Personally I'm not convinced that the ballots were legit. I think a lot of votes were discarded (srs), and they had already dropped out 7 million people due to changes in registration, which is not on.

Who said anything about them being Labour voters? They're probably just anarchists and I'm not sure anarchists even bother to vote do they? I wouldn't oppose any peaceful protest against the Tories at this point as they look to continue austerity, but creating trouble and vandalising national memorials is just pathetic, what is wrong with some people?

Lol, tbf the petition was so ridiculous and badly put together, it actually wouldn't surprise me if it was created by someone trying to make the left look like fools

How many of the people complaining about riots go to schools with a £13k/year science budget that can't even afford paper? It's easy to tolerate a Conservative government when the cuts won't affect you.

Anarchists would be against any form of government, not just the conservatives

I imagine most conservative voters subscribe to the idea that labour only supports low-lives (in the same way that a lot of labour voters subscribe to the idea that conservatives only support the wealthy). Doing things like vandalism does nothing but reinforce this point of view.

Show me any insulting, offensive graffiti daubed across war memorials written by a Conservative voter and I'll concede, otherwise I'm going to call you out on this.

Still, I really don't think these people are Labour voters, they don't have the pragmatism required to vote for a party which has some chance of winning. If they vote they'll have voted TUSC or Socialist Worker or Left Unity or at the very most Green which are all approximately a million miles from Labour.

The problem with the loud voices on the right on comments/forums and on the Tory backbenches is they think anyone left of about Michael Gove is a frothing communist. Can you really not tell the difference between Labour voters and anti-austerity protestors?

The argument from these left-wing protestors is that politics doesn't just involve voting but also protest, ie if you shout loudest and can carry out acts of violence, you get your voice heard.

I wonder what they would say then if a group like the EDL went on a protest against immigration, smashing up immigrants businesses, to show how passionately they felt about the issue and to force the government to take notice.

Over 30% of the electorate will pretend that there is no difference (basically Tory voters)

They don't need to daub it on war memorials, they can daub it on the front page of the tabloids and have it glaring down from the shelves of every corner shop in the land.

Just because the Conservative outcry would take a more "establishment" form doesn't mean it would be any less insulting, offensive, idiotic or tribalist.
