    Tae Kwon Do or Karate?

Is one of these harder to achieve belts in than the other as well?

Doing martial arts isn't about achieving belts. Anyone can wear a black belt and say "I'm black belt so I'm boss". You train in the art to become more skilled...Unless you're into the sport aspect of martial arts.

They're both just as "safe", although with karate it varies in terms of the level of contact.

You need to ask yourself what you want to achieve from the martial art. Self defence? Go for karate. Fancy kicks? Then taekwondo.

Although if you're new to martial arts, MMA is a good starting point.
