Ho can you tell the difference to which compounds have permanent dipole-dipole interactions and to which have instantaneous dipole-dipole interactions (van deer Waals forces)??

Is it made up of more than one element? if not them VdW

Is the molecule symmetrical? (octahedral, tetrahedral, trigonal planar or linear - in each the dipoles cancel out) then VdW

    If not, PDD.
