Or at least what effect would the former have on the latter? :P

Dammit, would the former work as a surfactant against the second (I know the first is a surfactant and the second is found in crude oil)

The bulky nature of the butyl group will help to absorb (dissolve) the covalent hydrocarbons and the alcohol group will help to take them into solution in water...

I am doing an experiment looking at the effect of detergents on bacterial growth when exposed to oil. Is this viable using these two chemicals? (Basically, will the surfactant dissolve the oil componant enough that we would expect the oil to have less of an effect on the bacteria?)

It is useful to know if these two would work together though otherwise the experiment isn't that useful :P What we actually want to test is the effect of a surfactant on bacterial growth when they live in an oil polluted environment. We just came up with these two chemicals as they each individually do their job. We only get once chance to do this practical so if these chemicals have no effect on each other it's of no use as the practical wants bacterial growth (or death) rather than seeing if two chemicals work together.

There are many compounds in crude oil, why have you decided on methylnaphthol?

we are allowed to get it and we know it kills the bacterial species we are using
