I've just got a job at my SU and I've noticed that they're taking PAYE deductions which means I get £5.20 an hour, not £6.50.

I've had two jobs previously, and did not have PAYE deducted. As a student, am I not eligible to earn up to a certain amount before I start paying income tax and NI? I'm sure I am, a good chunk of my wage is being taken away by this which isn't ideal, considering I don't work enough hours as it is... frustrating!

Are you on the correct tax code?

I'm pretty sure with PAYE you always pay tax and NI but you can claim the tax back at the end of the year.

Being a student has nothing to do with how much tax you pay.

    What's your tax code?
