The Liberal Democrats have gained over 10,000 new members since their election wipeout last week, taking them close to their 2009-2010 numbers. Why is this happening? They were soundly defeated throughout the nation, which indicates that their popularity had plummeted. Is it because the public suddenly realize what a Tory government without the Lib Dem leash is going to be like? Or is it just that the toxic Clegg has gone?

    Thoughts please.

Happened in Scotland with the SNP after they lost their independence referendum.

People seem to become protective when a group gets a bit of a kicking. While the public turned against the Lib Dems, there are of course many committed Lib Dems out there who think they were hammered for all the wrong reasons. It won't be new converts, but hardened Lib Dem voters who feel even more committed now.

Pity. The Lib Dems are like a homeless guy sitting outside Greggs, you can't change his life but you buy him some soup anyway.

Labour have also seen a similar surge, not quite as large proportional to the number of votes or members they had before, but still in excess of 30,000
