i live in harehills and have no problems. lived here all my life.
I don't think he'll get shot, but there are some bad bits like Chapeltown - the bad areas are pretty darn bad. Even the locals won't go there on their own after 6pm, I think he'll be okay though. Most of it is drug, not gun crime.

As some one who has always lived in Leeds, crime threads about it really suprise me!! But yes I am aware everyone's experience is different!
Daytime city centre- I often go on my own, shopping ect, never ever feel intimidated or have seen any crime.
Nightime city centre- Often go clubbing with jus one or two other girls (we are all 18) and again, never had any bad experiences. Generally at about 3 in the morning we walk from one end of town to the other to get a taxi from train station (as do many people) and even then there is no fear of anything at all, just friendly drunken boys really!
Of course there are areas to avoid, like harehills and chapletown, but you would never have to go there!
Now headingly is where most students live (just outside city centre) and of course you might get broken in to, just like anywhere else! But if your wondering how safe it is at night there is no need. Many young people, certainly not just the uni students, are more recently going with the trend of going to headingly on a night out instead of the city centre, and they wouldnt do that if they didnt feel safe.

But, clearly I can understand the concerns of the crime statistics, I myself might be going to Nottingham and obviously am all "oh my god, I might get shot"!!

Harehills
Chapel Town
Gipton
Burley
Hawksworth
Armley
Bramley
Wortley

There are more than THAT?! Crikey.
Leeds hasn't really got a reputation for being a city of high crime, and it is one of the bigger cities... so i'm sure if you stay in built-up areas then you'll be fine... Most of the no-go areas are residential estates, so there isn't much chance you'll be going there anyway.
I've never been victim of crime in Yorkshire before, and i'm going to London in september (i got told by one guy from central london- "it's not that bad really, as long as you stay in the busy areas, i've been mugged about 3 times, but i've lived here a few years"
there are bad bits in every city, and im sure theres been shoooooootings in most places! as long as u have a bit of sense then ull be ok! heard lots about the area down near clarence dock for muggings n stuff so just come home from nights out with a few mates n u should be ok. if you want to know what leeds centre is like at night listen to the kaiser chiefs 'i predict a riot'

As a student in Leeds the only area to avoid is Hyde Park at night when your alone. I've lived here all 18 years of my life & have never once felt intimidated or threatened. I've walked from one end of the city centre to the other in the early hours & i was completely fine.

People say avoid certain areas, but if u hv ur wits about u, don't look intimidated or threatening to others then u'll b fine.

Chapeltown, Harehills & Gipton r some bad parts of the city, but u shudn't really come across them anyway. They're in the inner city & suburbs, not right next to Headingley. I'd say the crime in Birmingham, manchester & certainly London r far worse.
I live in Harehills too JamieBecks23...although I've never had any problems personally I wouldn't recommend to other people that it's a good place to live! *pulls a face* It's a far cry from Shadwell where I lived for 16 years of my life! Still if you keep yourself to yourself down here it tends to be okay.

Its ok, but there are definately better places to go. Theres only the one room and its just a bit too cheap and cheerful.

majestyks is where you go when you're a fresher and you know no better ... lol ... then you find your niche and refine it. by the time you've got something you're really comfortable with, it's time to upsticks and move back home again. sigh.

to anyone reading this who drives: take a lot of protection for your car. leeds is really, really bad for car crime. every year i have had an attempt made on my car. steering lock is a great idea, possibly installing remote locking so you don't have to lock/unlock 40 million times when you're unloading all your stuff on move in day, and detachable cassette/cd covers are a gd idea too.

I'm sorry but Burley is not an area to avoid. I live in Burley, as do lots other students; there is a student house opposite us well as on either side of us. We live quite happily here with no trouble, and the locals and students get on fine. Burley is basically an extension of Hyde Park, yet you do not list Hyde Park as an 'area to avoid'. I have spoken to people who have lived in both Hyde Park and Burley, and have actually prefered living in Burley.

Don't be put off, Burley is fine.

Yes I live in Burley and i feel totally safe. Much more than I would do in Hyde Park. I do find areas of Leeds City Centre very unsafe at nighttime and make sure i get a taxi to the club and from the club to avoid the drunken townies in Leeds who just look for trouble. Start fights for no reason just cos how you dress. I wouldnt walk around the centre at night
all the leeds freshers who have never visited leeds at night are gonna bob themselves now after reading that lol!!!

Its mostly just common sense. You hear about freshers getting attacked etc, but its usually because they've done something dumb (like taken a short cut down a dark alleyway at half 3 in the morning, or getting in a taxi with a stranger) Use a bit of common sense and you'll be fine

I know someone else on here has already said this, but Harehills is not an area to avoid. I've lived here happily for 12 years. I've never even heard of a car being broken into down my street.
It is one of the cheaper areas for house prices (compared to some parts of Leeds) but that doesn't make it dangerous.

You do tend to find higher burglarly figures for the typical student areas ... but that's usually because a 4 bedroom student house will have at least 4 TVs, 4 computers etc.

As everyone has said you just need to have some common sense and you should be fine anywhere (yes ... even chapeltown. it's really not that bad)
