    1.Empty your recycle bin
    2.Run disk cleanup
    3.Download CCleaner and run dat shizznit (check the settings tho if you wanna keep your internet history and ting)
    4.Uninstall useless programmes you don't need
    5.Stop downloading porn
    6. You might want to search for disk defragmenter in your start menu and run that too, just to see if there's a problem there

    Should alleviate the issue a bit. If not, well, then there's something wrong.

    I thought it may be overheating but doesn't that cause the laptop to automatically shut down?

    Not always, depends what the motherboard is programmed to do.

    Only if the heat reaches a point where it could potentially cause damage to internal components. Also the way it shuts down is sh*t scary, it just dies.

    Regardless it's best not to let your laptop get very hot anyway, it's never good.

    clone your hard drive to a SSD drive

    use the ssd drive, throw away your old drive
