Rape has the potiential to destroy most people mentally for a long period of time and sometimes even life.
Can't really think of anything much worse than rape other than murder.

It destroys peoples self esteem but why?

Because being penetrated by someone else agianst their will is an utter violation of their free will and intrusive in a way few other things ever can be. Not to mention the brutality that is often involved. The rape itself is merely the impacting hit though, it's the psychological and possibly phyiscal trauma and that feeling of having been made powerless and subserviant that is the aftermath devestation imo as the victim tries 'to collect their pieces' and rebuild their lives they may come to turn with the full depth of damage of this impact on a psyhcological and mental level imo. It's not just straight forward though, as such an incidence can have an impact on and interfere with the funcitoning of a deeper part of the brain that seems to deal with learning of healthy habits, socially acceptable behaviour and moral instincts; empathy of the individual.
