Because the Ahlul Bayt are to be looked after and respected but that does not mean that their descendents are infallible or leaders of our deen; would you say the Quran is incomplete? It doesn't mention 12 imams, it doesn't mention the Ahlul Bayt being the leaders of the Muslims, it doesn't say all this. The Quran is said to be the light and guidance, not the Ahlul Bayt, rather they are an additional weighty thing to be cared for; if the hadith outlined for us to follow the Ahlul Bayt only (instead of an elected Khalifah), then the Prophet SAW would have said along the lines of 'two weighty things, the Quran and my Ahlul Bayt, both of which are a source of light and guidence...' but instead only the Quran was highlighted for guidance.
Furthermore the other hadith relating to 12 leaders of the Muslims has been grossly misinterpreted by Shia to fit their belief that 12 of the Ahlul Bayt will lead the Muslims; the hadith talks of 12 of the Quraysh, not the Bani Hashim - one can't say 'get me a phone' and then you are presented with a phone but then you reject the phone saying but I only want a Samsung - Shia can't say this hadith talks of 12 of the Quraysh, but then reject them and then say they have to be Bani Hashim.
