    When we get the passage in the GCSE exam, can we quote from the passage and then link it to something that is not in the passage- I mean for the section a only here!

    Don't intentionally try to but if it really helps solidify your point then you can, just touch upon it rather than spending ages talking about the rest of the text

    To be safe, I would suggest that you stick with the literature given to you. The last thing you want is to come up with an abstract idea not relating to Steinbeck's book and then not be credited for it!

    For the Of Mice and Men passage in the Lit exam, make sure that you focus in on the question's purpose and do not deviate ideas away from the passage. Of course you can borrow/state ideas from the same book in another section, but do not choose and idea that is distantly related to the passage you're analysing

    If you want to, you can answer both questions in one essay. Write about the extract then link that to the historical context and another bit of the book.
