OCR G491 & G492 - Significant Figures

Does anyone know how to work out how many significant figures to put for an answer to a given question? I've seen mark schemes penalize more than 2sf but also penalize less than 3sf in other places. What gives?

My teacher told me to put the same sf as the numbers in the question, if there are multiple ones then either one is okay

Cheers mine said 3sf or one more than what is used in the question. However on some mark schemes this is not condoned. So I think I will go with what you said
