if you have a quadratic , e,g X^2 + x -1 do you need to show working using the formula to obtain method marks?

As I can just get the values from my calculator and write them down.

The answer books for OCR have small spaces for working so doubt i could even fit it in.

the mark scheme says "Attempt to solve quadratic" m1d* , so I'm guessing the formula is needed?

Write down the formula and sub in the values. Simplify it and then put it into the calculator.
