He shoots Candy's dog
It was his gun which was used to shoot Lennie
Carlson is generally used to create conflict between characters (e.g. he turned on Curley leading him to turn on Lennie)
Carlson is also a very complaining character for example he complains about the smell of Candys dog and the darkness in the bunk house
Carlson is also a rather stupid and doesn't always know what is going on character for example he never realises his gun was stolen by George in order to kill Lennie.
He also has a lack of sensitivity for example after shooting Candys dog he cleans the gun in full view of everyone in the bunk house, also there is never an apology for shooting Candys dog (he just says 'he won't even feel it'.
Words describing Carlson:
tactless (insensitive), stupid, stirring, complaining
Carlson is a stereotypical insensitive cowboy, Steinbeck could be using Carlson to also give the reader a sense of people around the time the novel was written, he also sets the scene of where the novel is set.
