I have a gaming PC which I definitely want to take, but would it be worth buying a Chromebook for £300 for portability reasons as well?

Why a Chromebook? Most have an insanely low storage capacity and require you to be connected to the internet 24/7; you can buy a good laptop for that price.

I'm not completely ruling out laptops, I just thought that Chromebooks would be better for transferring files to and from my desktop PC because of their online-based storage.

Ye I'd not get a chromebook, I have a surface pro - if you have the cash they're very good.

Keep the money saved and wait until you're at uni. After the first couple of weeks of lectures you'll know whether or not a laptop will be of benefit to you. It's better to spend a few days thinking "I wish I had a laptop" and then being able to go out and buy one, than it is thinking "I wish I hadn't spent a few hundred quid on this laptop I'm not using" and not being able to return it.

Nope, gaming pc <3, chrome? its less powerful depends if it can handle the task to be undertaken on it, however I would advice the gaming PC is well capable of completely most task and the chrome book is just a waste of money.
