Apparently santander is very good and offers a free railway card for 3-4 years.

I'd keep an eye on this for when it's updated for 2015-16. They usually give a pretty good overview with insights from actual customers.

I had my first Student bank account with Barclays. Main reason being that when I tried to go to Natwest (at the time they were the bank offering the railcard), a very snotty woman told me that it'd take at least a month for me to get an appointment as I absolutely must speak to a budgeting advisor with a specialism in "young people" before I could open an account. There were 3 of 4 advisors available, but they were only for the "adults". Seeing as at the time I'd had a bank account and debit card for over 3 years and was used to managing the household finances I wasn't particularly impressed. So I stuck with Barclays who I already had an account with.

I then swapped to Lloyds TSB in second year after having a ton of problems with Barclays over getting an overdraft. I won't go into too much detail but I basically got ****ed around by "customer services" for 3 months before being refused an overdraft on the grounds that I didn't need one.... I did try Natwest again - the guy told me I couldn't open a student account until I'd closed my Barclays account, and then proceeded to credit check me without my permission leaving a nice black mark on my credit history. Lloyds were more than happy to open me a new current account, organise the switch from barclays, swap the account to student one once the Barclays one was closed, and then after 3 months I could request an overdraft. 3 months later I went in to ask about an overdraft. The teller said "okay, one moment please." Came back 1 minute later to tell me I now had a £1500 overdraft, simple as that!

After the split I ended up with TSB. Been just over 3 years now and never had a problem. And they gave me a Student Credit Card which is great as I'm getting to build up some kind of credit score.

But to be fair every bank will have people who've had great experiences and those who've had terrible ones
all banks have people who have problems but some banks have more than others. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/9520f074-a5ab-11e2-b7dc-00144feabdc0.html#axzz3aR0XcMJH
