illness and work

i have been (truthfully!) pretty ill w/ a cold although felt like i had flu for the last few days - constant running nose, extremely sore throat, headache, sneezing fits etc - since i am ill i have had to miss last nights out with my friends and stuff i really wanted to do with them before they go back to uni so i am pretty pissed off. but i think i am starting to feel better and while this is good i have work tomorrow and really don't wanna go especially as i had to miss all the good stuff and might be getting better just in time to go to work.. yayy.
so i have 2 questions - 1) i work in a coffee shop - is it actually ok to go back to work tomorrow or will i still be infecting people/customers/food/drink with my germs even if i am feeling better?
2) how can you persuade people you're still feeling too ill for work even if you look/sound better if i decide to skive off?
it's a stupid question i know. i'm sorry i'm being v. childish but i'm annoyed.
any answers?

explain to your boss that you feel better but are prolly still contagous. no one wants their food prepaired by someone who looks like they have the plague

No it isn't ok to go to work in the hospitality industry if you have a bad cold/flu/infection/etc.

They can't discipline you for being ill.

ok cool - i know, apart from not actually wanting to go to work i was genuinely bothered about infecting everybody, part of the reason i'm not going out with my friends for fear of sending them all back to uni with the plague.
i just don't know when you're past the 'contagious' stage of a cold?

tis just that oh i have a cold sounds such a pathetic excuse... it's surprising how something as small as cold can actually make you feel so ill.

Lol, I love the free use of "plague" in this thread. Hopefully you have something less contagious  Feel better soon :hugs:

I felt like a fraud when I went into work in the morning absolutely fine, then went home between shifts. Between that time I came down with a stomach bug and phoned in sick. To top it off it was my last day there-I bet they were suspicious but I was ill and there was no way I could've worked.

they can discipline you for being ill. i'm on the verge of a verbal warning if i'm off in the next 26 weeks. basically cos i'm failing to fulfill my contract. and what's worse, the bastards can do it! they've done it to me before! but if you're all full of germs then you cant go in. but they do say you're most contageous before your symptoms show. but it's not nice to be served by someone that's snotting everywhere.

why not go in and wait for them to see how ill you are and send you home??

I'd just go in and keep overacting until they send you home.
