We often get asked what the difference is between choosing vocals and composition/songwriting on the Popular Music course.

First of all, they aren’t different courses. They are the same course but with a different focus on the 1-1 provision.

Below is a list of the main points so you can compare between the two choices:

Specialise in Songwriting (Specialist Study Composition)
  • 1 x 1 hour long 1-1 songwriting lessons every week
  • Composition in context seminar (rather than Performance in Context seminar)
  • No 1-1 singing lessons
  • The student will get to perform (sing) and write in a band in the band module (Specialist GROUP Study Performance)
Specialise in Vocals (Specialist Study Performance)
  • 1 x 1 hour long 1-1 singing lesson every week
  • Performance in context seminar (rather than Composition in Context seminar)
  • No 1-1 songwriting lessons
  • The student will get to perform (sing) and write in a band in the band module (Specialist GROUP Study Performance)
So, you will get to sing and write in either choice (because you will be in the same Specialist GROUP Study Performance module either way). The choice affects where you would like your 1-1 focus to be.

There is also the possibility of changing options after the 1st year so you could change from Vocals to Composition or vice versa if you wanted to, and were of a suitable standard to do so at that point. You would however, have to pass an audition to be able to make the change.

Finally, if you’re struggling to make a decision before your application, we are happy to help you with this at your audition. For example, you could apply for Performance and still be offered a Composition place (or vice versa) if it becomes clear at audition where your focus should be.

I hope this answers a few questions in this area!
