English at Warwick

'ello! I've applied to do English at Warwick... oh my it'sthis year now!

Anyway, I've got an interview and I was just wondering if there was anyone who was doing English around and could give me a rough idea of what it's like. What's the best and the worst thing about doing English at Warwick?

Oh, and if anyone could say what questions they got for their interviews or what might possibly be asked in the interview. Also, are they formal, or casual? I'm rather worried about the whole thing

Hey, I'm exactly same situation...sorry I can't offer any real advice. But I'm also applying for English at Warwick (probably my first choice) and a bit worried about the interview, because there seems to be no information around about it at all!
But I really really like the look of the course and loved the campus and feeling around the uni when I visited.

Well done for getting interviews - it's very competitive!!!

I'm afriad I did maths, but my housemate did English and she said it wasn't too bad. Apparently not all interviews are the same - treating you as individuals or something like that - but they do try to make you as "at ease" as possible. She said it didn't feel like a test which I guess is good!

As for good bad points I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that the Arts Centre is a pretty good draw - writers in all the time and good productions of things (plus Stratford on your doorstep!)

congratulations on getting through to interviews, and good luck for them. Sorry I can't offer any advice, just wanted to be friendly though!
Same here really as the others. Can't offer advice about the interview as such as I do theatre studies rather than English though I can tell you that Warwick is in a great location for Shakespeare related things and the arts centre does have a good programme in terms of plays and visiting writers who do talks. Good luck with the interviews!

Hey, I have an interview next month as well and I'm pretty scared to be honest (had an interview at Oxford, got rejected, ouch).

Meh, the best we can do is answer the questions they ask I guess. Apparently they'll ask us alot about our personal statement which sucks, I've read many better books since then than the ones I put in my statement.

Good luck.

I know what you mean, I put stuff on my personal statement that is quite academic but I don't know if I can talk about it as passionately as I can other things. Oh well. Fingers, ears and whiskers crossed!

Yeah, while I love the things I talked about on my statement, I have since found books and subjects that I would prefer to talk about in an interview now. Plus I'm a bit bored of revising over PS things and talking about them in Cambridge interview.

Got an interview on Feb 2nd too! Well done to all you guys. I think, perhaps im being over-enthusiatic, that its a big step towards an offer if you have an interview, in this case. I say that from my impression of the the interview day: it starts at 10 and finishes at 4, you get a tour, meet students and have a personalised chat/interview at the end. It's not an oxbridge type thing, it's personal; as if they know most of us will be getting offers...

Oooh, my parents will be driving me up - does anybody know where they're supposed to go? because I'm guessing they don't come on the tour or meet the students. If not, I suppose they can just go shopping in town or something.

better send them to leamington (not coventry) or they will forbid you to consider going to warwick!

send them to gallery in the arts centre to pick up a leaflet on exploring art on campus. it kept my dad occupied for a couple of hours.

good luck with the interviews

Yeah, my parents are driving me there, so not sure what to do with them either hehe...I reckon they're going to want to come along and look around the campus etc though that might just be annoying and probably not really allowed anyway.

Does anyone know how long it takes until after the interview to receive an offer/rejection? I've been hearing of people not receiving replies till March/April, but since the interview is beginning of Feb, it should be soon after that, right? Or am is that just wishful thinking, hehe? :p:

I thought you got a reply within a few weeks after an interview. I don't think it would be straight after though. Wish it was

Also, I sent off the slip confirming my interview - but do we get any other information about it in the post, like what time it is and where it is? Or was that in the letter that we got in the first place with the slip on it?
Does anybody have an interview for English and American literature? I've still not heard anything from Warwick and I'm a bit confused, my friends who applied for English at Warwick have all had rejections or interview letters and I've not heard anything -- I'm starting to wonder if that is simply because I've applied for this slightly different course. It won't be the end of the world if I don't get an interview, but I'd like to know either way!

Will be because its for a slightly different course most probably. Don't worry!

best thing about doing english at warwick: it's an awesome subject, at an awesome university

worst thing: you will, more likely than not, have to do medieval-renaissance as a mandatory module in your first year. IT. SUCKS. unless you like translating Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from middle english!

my interview was for english with creative writing, but the process is all the same. he asked me general interviewy questions, we got into a convo about historical accuracy playing a part in literary validity - just let your passion and personality shine through and you'll be fine

good luck, it's a great place!

Hey, ive applied to do English and Latin Literature and i got an offer a cpl of weeks ago so if it goes by "joint honours-y" type subjects im sure ul get one soon  hope this helps a lil...:s du have to interview for urs? x

I've heard people don't get offers/rejections from Warwick for English & American studies till very late - March/April. This may not always be the case, of course, but I think it's because it's joint honours they have to consult between the departments, etc, so it takes longer.
grace, though you count it as the worst thing, that just makes me want to go to Warwick more to be honest! I love medieval literature and really want to try translating into modern English, etc. I can understand not being thrilled about studying it as compulsory though. I think it's a bit of an acquired taste!
Sopheh, I think all the info is in the letter, as they say the time to meet, where and so on in that. Wish they'd send some more detailed info about the interview itself beforehand, but I guess since it's 'personalised' they can't really do that.
Thanks everyone. Although English and American Literature (not American Studies) isn't a joint honours, it's just another course in the English and Comparative Literature faculty - they offer English Literature, English and American Literature and English Literature and Creative Writing.
Also they said at the open day that they interview so I thought I'd have heard by now.
Ah well. Thanks again
