are you sure it will be a general? most minor is under local i think.
You'll feel uncomfortable for a short period of time, then for about 1-2 seconds you're aware of it taking effect, then after that you dont remember anything (because you're asleep).

I've had two, last one was pretty recent. For some reason I could taste it on my breath just before I went under... They had to give me a fair amount though because I'm pretty big, so took a while longer than usual... Apparently I said 'Thats the ****!' then fell asleep lmao

you want realy know much about it, its abit like being uncontrolably tired n cant keep your eyes open. i admit having the thingy in your hand hurts a little but thats it.

1. You'll go into hospital, they give you a bed, give you some time to get sorted.

2. They'll start to prepare you for the op, perhaps take a reading or too (blood pressure maybe) and place a small needle in the vein just above your wrist (well it was there for me), it doesn't hurt its just like a small injection really.

3. They'll bring you through to theatre, just before you go in they'll switch on the anesthetic whilst counting down from 10, you'll probably feel drowsy on 6 seconds but wont have much time to notice, as on 5 seconds you'll be asleep!

4. You wake up, the op having been completed! They let you rest for a few hours and monitior you, but you won't feel ill or anything really maybe just groggy.

Thats all there is to it, if you dont mind a small injection prick in your arm and feeling drowsy for one second, then you have nothing to worry about!

Btw I had general for a tooth out so you probably know what you are talking about dear.

The anaesthetist tried to give me the anaesthetic through the veins on the backs of my hands, but it didn't take so I got given oxygen. I have a very strong resistance to anything like that, so it took about half a minute for me to drop off. There one minute, gone the next, then you wake up. Weird, but not unpleasant.
Yea, both times I had it they did it through the back of my hand. To be honest, it wasnt very comfortable, but certainly was bareable.

Yeh its a weird but short-lived sensation as it takes effect. I was also felt quite sickly after being under and threw up after the op, but that is probably quite extreme, most people awake feeling simply a bit groggy.

It's kinda weird but fine. They wheel you into the anaesthetic room and hook you up. They inject into a vein in your hand which stings a little and will hurt a bit when you wake up but it's not too bad. A few seconds later I started to feel like there was a huge weigh crushing my chest, it's kinda scary but normal, your chest feels really depressed and it's hard to breath, but that only lasts for two seconds, then you're out of it!

When you wake up it's weird, I was really drowsy for what seemed like ages in the recovery room. I could hear my dad talking to me, but I was seeing these random visions and thought he was talking about something totally different, and I was saying something weird! It's like being in a really deep sleep, when you hear something on the tv and that comes into your dream if you get me!

It's nothing to be worried about though, you'll be fine!
mmm, they sticka cannlua in the back of your hand, stick some drugs in it, whilst tellign you to count down. everyone like myself pretends they are wide awake still, i remember sayng, ooo, its like a couple of pints. then murmuring of vodka. next tihng i knew i was in recovery and desperate for a wee.
actually i think that was the worst thing. that post-op wee. really stung!

Of course it doesn't hurt, you're asleep!
They make you count backwards but you don't remember after that... that's kind of the point.

haven't we had variations on this thread from you already? I swear I remember telling you what my generals were like!

I remember lying there thinking "It's not working, it's not working, they're going to have to do it with me awake" (I was 10 at the time, not quite as trained as now ). But the next thing I remember is coming out of the lift shouting the place down because I wanted a drink and no-one would give me any! So clearly it worked.

So yeah. Cannulation (sticking the needle in) is probably the worst bit. A few people have issues with GAs but if you're otherwise healthy and have no family history of problems with anaesthetic, it's unlikely. Hope everything goes well.
Inject - you sleep straightaway

You wake up feeling totally ****ed. I felt wildly groggy the rest of the day and slept for most of it.
A tap in the back of your hand, they put some liquid in and you think "I wonder how long this is goi...." and then you're in the recovery room. Been a long time since I've been under (2 weeks before my 9th birthday and I've just turned 21), but I can't imagine that the after-effects can be much worse than a moderate hangover, with maybe a bit of mild delerium. It's certainly better than having the operation without the anaesthetic!

venflons are suprisingly painful i had to say. never realised just how bad they were. and that was just a blue one!
greys must be agony!

I've been under a couple of times, using the mask. It's amazing! This wonderful feeling of being soo sleepy and just drifting off, then before you know it you're awake again, completely surreal!

I love GAs hehe :p:. The worst part is the needle like everyone else has said, but even that isn't too bad especially if you've had the numbing cream on beforehand. You'll be asleep before you can count to 10! Ahh and waking up you tend to feel a bit groggy but other than that it's fine.
it puts you to sleep.

but no it doesnt hurt

I had a general when I was about ten at the dentists, put me off going again because of the smell of the mask.........had to count to ten but fell asleep before I got to five. As a student nurse I have seen people put under, they have the venflon put in, which is a bit uncomfortable ( had two of those myself, so I know) and then the anesthetic goes in the venflon and within seconds they are asleep . I have had both LA and GA , and I much prefer the LA ( even had major surgery under LA), feel much more in control, but thats just me. All I would say is dont worry!.

Forgot to say, when the anesthetic goes in to the venflon it does feel cold, and some people say they can feel it going up their arm.
