For red shift, the doppler effect is where when an object is moving away from us, the frequency of the waves emitted (in this case light) is lower. This means a longer wavelength, so it drops to the longest wavelength of the visible light spectrum which is red, and this is how we know that distant galaxies are moving away from us.

The Steady State Theory:
- states the universe has always existed, but is constantly expanding.
- also states that new matter is being created as the universe expands.
- supported by red shift, but not CMB radiation.

The Big Bang Theory:
- states the universe began as a result of a large explosion, and has continued to expand ever since.
- happened about 13.7 billion years ago.
- supported by both red shift and CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background) radiation.

Red Shift:
- when light is shifted towards the red end of the spectrum.
- proves the universe is expanding.
- proves galaxies are moving away from us; the greater the amount of red shift, the further away the galaxy is from us.

CMB Radiation:
- Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation.
- huge release of microwave radiation as a result of the Big Bang.
- can be detected by telescopes outside of the Earth's atmosphere.

Hope this helps, apologies for the length.
