It rocks! Ive just been offered a place there to read experimental psychology i had a brilliant time when i went down for my interview. The accomodation is really good(coz its a rich college) also this means you get grants for books and meaningful activities in the holidays. The people are really friendly and a lot of them are state school. One final plus point - i'll be there!

Hmmm, John's is fairly well-known for being a bit snobbish about its status as the second-richest college (ChCh just got all the Harry Potteer royalties and just pipped John's to it). Also not the prettiest college in the world and some people can get swallowed up by the academic pressure but other people love it; depends on the individual really.

st john's is probably the second most academic college behind merton (read my post under Oxford Colleges for law about academic colleges). its also very rich which means cheap accomodation and loads of book grants/general benefits. its a prestigous college, one of the largest in terms of undergrad numbers i think.

In my opinion the old buildings are as pretty as any college, however there are some nasty concrete 1960s accommodation blocks placed amongst them with considerable architectural insensitivity. However on the plus side that does mean that all student are housed on the main college site, which is not true for that many colleges.

Biochemsitry. I have no idea if there is a college or two that is known as the 'biochem. college' so I'm just oging on other features!

Good point id forgotten about those i never went there while i stayed at st johns except once to do a test. They are quite well hidden at the back though. When i was there all the rooms were empty, do you have to take all your stuff home at the end of each term?

I am looking at St Johns too, just wondering what its like for families? Are the rooms decent and are there many families there? Ive heard that its not too bad for either grads or families.

Also - does it offer acom for the full 3 years of graduate study?
families?

They do if your family is a wife and 2 kids. Not everyone at university is 18 with no ties....

Don't know. Not many colleges offer accomodation for 3 years post-grad but St. John's is more likely to than most. Your best bet is to contact the college directly.

I would be coming with my wife and child (only 1 @ mo but who knows by then  ).

So am trying to find decent college for them as well - altho perhaps accom out of college may be best but if good family accom avail on site then all the better.

Also I am an international so not familiar with the collegiate system - tho slowly working it all out, thnx to this board!

Apparently Wolfson's very good for family accomodation. It's a college specifically for graduate students. Grad. colleges are likely to be best prepared for families.

I'd endorse that. I *think* Wolfson provide standard accomodation for 3 years (if you want it) although whether they'll provide family accomodation for 3 years is something I'm not sure about. Also Wolfson is a little bit further out of town than most colleges (St. John's is about as central as you can get) which may or may not be a good thing in your circumstances. On the bright side as an international student you get priority on accomodation.
