Maltby conducted research showing that girls who had parasocial relationships with a celebrity who was slim lead to poor body image in the girls and a predisposition to eating disorders.
However, I can't work out if this is support or not the the absorption addiction model because it does on one hand show a link between parasocial relationships and poor mental health, BUT it sort of shows that the parasocial relationship CAUSES the poor mental health, not that the poor mental health and attempts to escape from reality CAUSE parasocial relationships?
So is it support or not support for the Absorption Addiction model? Or is it that it is support, but the causal direction issue I explained is a flaw?
