Righto.... so does no one join any societies at LSE? Surely people do something other than write essays and choose what colour seats to have in their Mercedes when they become an investment banker...

Hey all!

Are there active Drama and/or Music societies at LSE? (if not, how about the Uni of London?)

Any information would be appreciated! And for that matter, any information about any of the societies, which are the best ones?

Hi.
There is both a drama and a music society.
I was a member of the music society my first year, mainly so that I could use the pianos in the music room adjacent to the Shaw library. I didn't really like the society but they seemed to be quite active.
If you're into music, I suggest you go to the Beaver [LSESU newspaper] meeting in fresher's week, you can easily become a music writer and that means free tickets to concerts and free cds. Having said that, the editors usually keep the best stuff for themselves and you may have to review bad music ad nauseam. If you stick around long enough you can become the editor yourself though.
The drama society is very active. They put up a theatre version of Le Petit Prince this year.

As for the other societies. I recommend the Business Society if you're into finance. Very active and you get a free shirt. Grimshaw Club is also excellent. Interesting speakers and many events about current affairs as well as trips [This year: Oslo, Lebanon and Vienna]. The German/European societies are also good... but then I don't know what you're into so I can't really recommend much. I suggest you take a look at the LSESU page, they have a listing of all the societies. Do stay away from the Socialist Workers Party though, unless you are a strong supporter, they have a tendency never to stop the propaganda if you ever so much as hint that you may listen for one second [my favorite was about the abolishment of the Israeli state].
There's an extremely active drama society (I'm mates with the president), as well as a number of different music societies (alt music etc).

Also, I'd recommend joining aiesec if you want a different experience. It's a combination of the business society and a drinking society and is pretty good fun. Check out the link in my sig and also www.aieseclse.org.

my flatmate last year was swedish so i joined the scandinavian society.
it's quite fun: pub crawls, viking party, xmas party, summer pic nic.
it has the reputation for having the hottest girls [but that's because of the swedish stereotype]. i wasn't too impressed but judge for yourself.
the parties were quite cool.

I think i might join AEISEC (sp?) or the Business Society, I am thinking of a career in tax but am studying History, need all the help I can get! I'm also heading for the netball team because I love playing, and the History Soc. How much help would the societies' contacts be to me for help in my career, i.e. internships?
