Economics and Management.

First choice - Merton (no, honestly... So I may be ever so slightly mad, mmm?)

- Excellent location
- Three year accommodation
- Strong academically - don't mind pressure. I have a work hard, play hard ethos, one of those people who don't sleep and do work at 2 a.m. in the morning as running and being involved in various clubs and societies for the rest of the day...I like a hectic lifestyle.
- An old college and pretty (I'm superficial, so sue me  )
- Small-medium size (friendly, intimate atmosphere?)
- Healthy intake for my subject. I liked St John's but they had 1 E&M student per year, New and Univ were high on my shortlist until I found out they both only had 2 E&Mists/-ers (?) per year.

So we get Merton. I'm fairly happy with my decision.

University College only has 2 E&Mists per year? That's amazing!I think I need reconsider my shortlist.

Not really when you consider they only give out 100 places per year, and a lot of college that offer E+M will only take 3-6 students; it's not nearly as big as PPE.

So buy one  When you come up, obviously. Not before, that would be lame and stupid.

Exactly. If im going to have one, ill have to be there, so you see, thats really my aim. Its like people walking around in oxford university hoodies, when they dont go there.

Eeek overrun by Oxford applicants!!!

FaerieLand
yes, i am indeed a girl! Don't really mind as long as its not 2 far out of town, and def not girls only  i like the old colleges, bricks ok (like robinson  ) but dont like concrete. T'wud be good if it had good music facilities but most of them have i think. Its hard to decide, of course everyone promotes their own college.

Yeah, everybody seems to want you to go to their college . Have you read the alternative prospectus by the way? That helped me a little to narrow down my shortlist. What instrument(s) do you play btw? I don't know how much music I'm going to keep up at uni, especially since everything but my keyboard is owned by the council :frown:.

Other classics hits include "I'd rather be jo public than a Tab" and "I'd rather be a Rudeboy than a Tab".

You can't sing them until you get here though; same goes for college colours, you can wear them when you get here, but not before. And Tabs could called us Oxonians, but we call ourselves that so it wouldn't work. Cambridge copy almost everything from Oxford anyway.

Wow, you guys are just so creative! I feel so deeply, deeply insulted. I have to say that at one point yesterday I feared my sanity when I admitted to someone where I was from, whilst standing on the riverbank  but all was ok. And what do we copy? At least we didn't copy your frankly ridiculous gowns - I did have a giggle at the silly people in subfusc wearing mini-batcapes

Deianra - PPE may be a good degree, but it's only good if that's what you want to do. I have more respect for Mathmos (in the academic sense, no other way!) myself, and obviously Medicine is the best overall! There isn't really one "best" degree that you could pick for everyone.
and what about music??? BEST SUBJECT EVER!!!

Musos do music.

Music's too much fun to be called a subject

Of course - I'd never try to assert that Economics was the best subject (*coughs* except jokingly?)

I have tremendous respect for the Medics and Mathmos amongst others (I certainly could never handle medicine!) but to me, PPE is just wow. Simply, and it will probably always be. Shame I'd be rubbish at it :frown:

I think PPE is an unique degree in that it can be made to suit pretty much anyone with an interest in social science, similar to NatSci except with science instead of social science. And the fact it the biggest degree here with about 900 undergrads, and because it was created here means that it will always be the flagship subject. E+M's just as good though, shame SBS and Economics departemnts are so far apart. Management is outstanding, Economics has it's weaknesses at Oxford, and there's no need to go into them here, but overall E+M is an exceptional degree with one of the highest application ratios. I don't think it will ever take over PPE though as the
ultimate degree course.

And we don't have Mathmos! Say that and you'll be sleeping in the Isis.

I have an interest in social science and you couldn't pay me to do PPE

Why is nobody applying to Newnham??

A slight notice about the CUSU alternative prospectus- it was written a while ago so some things aren't accurate. especially rents

I wasn't meaning to use it as a bible, just it gave me some ideas . I've heard Robinson's getting a good deal more expensive these days. :frown:

Personally, I don't want to go to a girls only college because I tend to have a lot more male friends than female friends, and in general be into more male-dominated hobbies. Newnham just doesn't sound like my kinda place that's all .

Just a guess, but isn't it an all-girl college? If it is, then there's your reason.

I've heard Trinity throw money around like it's going out of fashion . Now that sounds good

Ah well, I've heard living at Cambridge is cheaper than halls in other unis so I hope it won't be too bad  .
Mind you if my dad had his way, I'd be living at home and studying at the college across the road to save money

College prizes?

Awww I don't mean to offend you. I would just annoy the Newnham girls with my computer gaming and role-playing habits .

How did an engineer win an English prize, if you don't mind what may be a stupid question

But then again I think the competition for these prizes would probably be fierce, and I'm under no illusions that I would be the best at my subject if I even got into Cam.

What do you want to do?

Social and Political Sciences.
It sounds really really interesting, and I think politics, sociology and psychology do overlap to quite an extent, and I'm interested in learning about all of them.
