If you're not catered then the deciding factor with accom. in my opinion is the kitchen- the source of many rows!

What swung it for me was the fact that Marl/Sols have 8 hob thingies and 2 fridge freezers between 7 people and most of the others have 4 hob rings and 1 fridge freezer afaik.

I'm glad I'm in Marlborough, but I wouldn't have minded being in John Wood because the people I've met from there seem to have a great time all together. They're really friendly, but that could be because they want to come over to your kitchen between lectures for a cuppa, instead of mooching around campus!

All the rooms are nice, it doesn't really matter where you go. Norwood gets a bit of banter but they're a lot nicer inside than they look

Living in John Wood is like living in one big family, most of us know each other. Unlike Eastwood where most people don't know who lives next door to them! But yeah, wasting time between lectures is a bummer:P

Unless you are on the bottom floor, where you get half the hobs and half the fridgefreezers with only two less people.

I dont really care that much, more the fact they are crappy electric ones :p:

You cant complain at 4 hobs between 5...thats tonnes! And 1 fridgefreezer between 5...I wish. We have 4 hobs and two fridge freezers between 13 and we manage fine!

^ Well its okay for some, perhaps you live off the microwave :p:

Its annoying for us, we always seem to cook at the same time, and for a proper meal you need two hobs and the oven

What we all do...and is very successful...is cook a four person meal...and then freeze it. We also try to split it up so were not cooking at once. Then yes, for a while you can cook off the microwave. Its called adapting!!! To be honest, being in Eastwood you have to adapt...and then its not bad!!!

Was that a water polo ball I spotted there?

It is indeed - although I do canoe polo rather than water polo :p:

I have those Primark purple slipper boots! Got a hole in them after 4days grrr. Get what you pay for.

At the end of the day, with uni accommodation you just get used to what you've got. It's really not going to ruin your life if you have to wait an extra five minutes to cook your dinner. The thing that is the most important is who you live with and that's one thing you can't choose.

I'm in Quarry and having looked at some of the other Westwood blocks (the houses not corridors) their rooms are much bigger than ours! But yeah you can't choose which Westwood you go into. I think Quarry, Mendip and Wolfson are corridors and the rest are houses.

They removed some pods from Quarry last summer, with the rest going out this summer. I've had no problems with my pod (love it!) but I have a couple of friends who have had horrible leaking etc..

However, the "new" rooms are really big, comfy bed, nice sink, WARDROBE! and are actually very nice, but yeh you do lose the pod.

Btw, if you want Marlborough & Solsbury you need to apply exactly when it comes out (10am I think) and click through it in like 5 minutes or they will boko out (as most places are given to international/post grads).

Pictures of my very messy Quarry room & pod!

True, you do have to apply early, but I know some people who didn't apply in the first hour and still got places, the system seems to be a bit weird. As far as I'm aware there aren't any post-grads in Solsbury/Marlborough, and there's not an over-proportionate amount of international students - in my flat we're all British - there does seem to be quite a few students who took gap years though.

Im in Marlborough but I didn't apply in the first hour, I know others that didn't either. I'm undergrad, british and didn't have a gap year so I don't know how they decide who gets the rooms!!!

Reply 32

I think they use witchcraft or something to decide rooms. It seems pretty random:p:

Do gap year students apply for accommodation the year before they go to uni? Cause then they would get first pick.

^ I was wondering this...^

Gap year students apply at the same time as everyone else. The difference is the accomodation office already know theyre definitely in, as theyve already got the results, and thus they offer their accomodation earlier. If I remember rightly I got a room either before that years results came out, or little more than a day after, so they had obviously allocated my room before most students even confirmed their place!

So it's an advantage to have a gap year if you're set on getting the most popular accommodation then? :s-smilie:

Well, i wouldnt recommend a gap year just to get
Marlborough/Solsbury- its seriously not that important. You will be happy wherever you end up:smile:

It would be an interesting sign of the competition within UK universities.

"I took a gap year to really find myself, develop my personality, and grow emotionally and spiritually... and to get the room with the ensuite when I finally got to uni".

Possibly WONT sound so good on your UCAS application?
