Top Scottish unis for Engineering

Which universities in Scotland are famous for Engineering?

The University of Aberdeen
University of Dundee
The University of Edinburgh
University of Glasgow
Heriot-Watt University
Napier University
University of Paisley
The University of Strathclyde

The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2007 ranks only three Scottish uni's - Dundee (top 13), Aberdeen (top 17) and Glasgow (top 20) - in the top 20 for Civil Engineering.

On the other hand, Guardian's League Table ranks Scottish uni's for Civil Engineering as follows:

Edinburgh (top 4)
Glasgow (top 8)
Strathclyde (top 9)
Heriot-Watt (top 11)
Other uni's are under top 20

Which one of those uni's do you think is the best in terms of
(a) quality of teaching,
(b) quality of campus,
(c) best teaching staffs,
(d) best student/staff ratio, and
(e) highly regarded both in UK and abroad?

Edinburgh, and particularly Heriot-Watt have very strong Engineering departments I'm told.

Edinburgh (best uni in scotland imo)
Strathclyde (v good rep again for it)
Heriot-Watt (v good rep for engineering)
Aberdeen (Civil and Mechanical are its strong points - has good connections with the north sea oil industry.)

Nobody gives a toss what the Guardian says. Leftie *****.

Actually, I was reading the Guardian university guide 2007 recently. I was amazed at how out of date the information on my uni was. It was really terrible.

Edinburgh (best uni in scotland imo)

Certainly, but is it the best for civil engineering in your opinion?

(b) quality of campus,

I don't think you can rely on other people's opinions on this front - it's totally subjective. If you can (I notice you're living outside the UK) I'd strongly recommend visiting them to see for yourself and be able to apply your own tastes to the situation.

Probably not, but the sheer reputation of the university makes up for it. A 2:1 from Edinburgh will get you a very good job; the university is internationally reknowned. In addition, I know in terms of sciences it is a university that is strong at mathematics and physics (better then its Scottish counter-parts) - which goes hand in hand with all the other sciences (inc engeneering). So the teaching quality will be excellent regardless; as I am sure he would have to take modules in these other departments (in my uni they do).

As for the quality of the campus, imo the OP should not waste his time coming over to the UK to check them out. It will be a waste of money for him. Plus personally, I wouldn't care what the campus looked like if I got into a university such as Edinburgh; and I am sure you wouldn't either :p:

Yup, it's quite expensive for me to travel to and from UK for the purpose of attending Open Days, though I feel it would be useful to choosing uni according to my tastes.

From whatever info and opinions I got to know about U of Edinburgh till now, I can consider it as one of the best unis in UK. From xyz2k6's opinion, it seems like Edinburgh's reputation is the Oxbridge-equivalent in Scotland.

If there were any websites/BLOGs, containing many pics nd vids of the campuses, then it could be a good substitute of Open Days for intn'l students. I'd highly appreciate if anyone can provide me with such pics and/or vids.

Yes in the UK Edinburgh and St Andrews are both considered to be the Oxbridge of Scotland. St Andrews (more recently due to Prince William attending there) however its strengths are not in Engineering; rather everything else. Edinburgh is the true all rounder.

Glasgow has always been considered as a good uni, but I think due to its location it has never been that popular amongst southerners. Hence, Edinburgh has more of a rep. Dundee and Aberdeen are both good scottish unis; Dundee's routes lie in St Andrews as it used to be an extention of that uni. Hariot Watt, Stryclide (sp?) are reknowned for their strengths in Engineering, rather then traditional academic subjects. As for the rest i.e. Robert Gorden, Napier, Paisley - they are considered to be ex polytechnics and are normally frowned upon.

No, it's not the Oxbridge equivalent in Scotland. Oxbridge is Oxbridge and people don't get put in the local papers for getting an offer from Edinburgh!
Prospectuses and uni websites are the obvious places to get pictures of unis.
Heriot Watt I've heard has a good rep for engineering.
Would discount Napier and Paisley as they're generally not the best thought of unis since you seem concerned about such things, and I haven't heard anything special about their engineering departments.
Other than that, it might be a good idea to tell us what sort of uni you want to go to?

Not ex-polys and there weren't any polys in Scotland. Some of the smaller Scottish unis have really excellent courses among the best in Britain for what they do and certainly aren't frowned on by employers

Yeah sure, technically it isn't. But in England anyway, when people think of the main universities in Scotland, they always think of Edinburgh and St Andrews. Internationally both of these universities have a fantastic reputation on the same level as many of the unis in the top 10. So seeing as though Oxbridge are English unis and not Scottish; Edinburgh and St Andrews are considered in England anyway to be their Scottish counterparts..

Well, that's a rather large misconception then...
If you're going to take it that way, you could say that Leeds and Leeds Met are the Oxbridge of West Yorkshire!
In terms of prestige, which is generally a load of *******s anyway, they're not at the same level. Good unis, and most probably the best in Scotland, but let's not get ahead of ourselves

Leeds and Leeds met are English unis, as is Oxbridge. Anyway the fundamental point I was trying to make that they are probably the best in Scotland as you have agreed.

Oxbridge isn't in West Yorkshire....

As for the best in Scotland, I always think it depends what you want to do. Almost all the Scottish unis seem to have their own particular strengths. On overall *reputation*, St Andrews is generally thought of better I would say, with Edinburgh a little way ahead of Glasgow in recent years.

Really? St Andrews is considered better?

Hasn't Edinburgh got better RAE ratings in its departments then St Andrews?
Reply 19
I even highlighted the word reputation...most people don't know about RAE ratings (in all honesty, I don't know what RAE ratings are...). (Most people also don't care)
