I am very interested in doing a year in industry in Canada, particularly around Toronto. But I'm not too sure on where to start looking, or how I would approach an organisation about this.

This is a longshot, as it's a bit of a niche I think, but a few questions - particularly for anyone who has been here or in a similar position before:

1) How difficult is it to get a salaried, full-time internship position? It's going to be very difficult for me to fund otherwise.

2) Any particularly recommended companies/occupations? (My course allows me to differentiate into microbiology, cancer biology and immunology, virology etc but not until the third year, so can take any one of those routes really)

3) Do companies tend to advertise positions on their websites or do you have to approach them first? I've taken a good look around websites like indeed.ca but internship posts are scarce.

4) How far in advance should I expect to have to approach them? I still have a year or more yet.

I'm currently a first year at University of Bristol in Cellular Medicine and hope to get a 1st (results are not out yet). Placement is between 2nd and 3rd year.

Really, any help or input at all is appreciated. Thankyou all in advance!

Hi there.

I'm not an expert at this, but have you considered looking at positions in hospitals? Usually they would offer internships to students, although I'm not sure if they will hire international students. You can also phone universities to see if they are willing to give you an internship, although it will most likely only take place in the summer. You can also consider looking at laboratories to see if they are offering any internship positions as well.

Here are a few hospitals that you might want to consider first:

Women's College: http://www.womensresearch.ca/learnin...ummer-program/
St. Michael's Hospital: http://www.stmichaelshospital.com/research/edsummer.php
Sunnybrook Hospital: http://sunnybrook.ca/research/content/?page=sri-ed-summ
Sick Kids Hospital: http://www.sickkids.ca/Research/Stud...earch-Program/
