You mean relative peace in Europe? No nukes aren't to thank. That lack of economic dependence between the USSR and US is. Really they were both independent of each other so never needed to fight a war against each other. It isn't like the Germans needing the channel ports or land to the east. Basically the US and USSR had what they wanted in the Cold war.

Read a book called: Flash points the emerging crisis in Europe. This peace isn't going to last much longer.
