I'm arriving on the 23 of January. I'm going to study Strategic Decision Making, Contemporary Strategic Issues and something else but I don't remenber now . Anyway it's III level.

I hope that I find some barbells at the gym  I think about working out at headingly but I think that it's nice to have a gym at close quarters  so at first I visit Opal's gym. What's more I haven't received any free membership yet. Maybe when I arrive they give me something (I hope).

See you on the spot !

the gym at opal is a nice feature as it allows little excuses to miss a work out, but the weights room is quite small so you gotta pick your times otherwise its busy [i can't work out in busy gyms its too hectic. usually before 4 or after 8 is fine]. The dumbells go up to 30kg which is alrite, main gripes are that they havent installed the mirrors yet, and there is no lat pull down machine/pull up bar, which leaves a gap in your workout i reckon. I love the pool/sauna/hot tub/steam room though, however you still gotta pick your times or it'll be too busy like!

I'm gonna start going up to headingly i think. To get your sports pass all you do is take your accomodation contract to the desk at the sports center on campus, they will then do something to your student ID card that allows you to get into the gyms for free. I believe to use the freeweights room you have to pay a small fee [7.50?] and have a small induction, though i've heard this is just a quick 5 min thing to make sure you know what you're doing, i hope to get that done next week.

hope this helps

Could you tell me what time it is open ? I mean at Opal. Are there any fees ? How much do they charge for the gym/sauna/pool etc. ?

I like working out in the evening between 6-9 p.m, but if it is crowded at that time I'll have to change my habits  Maybe it will be less crowded in the morning.
Reply 7
i think its 7am til 9pm weekdays and 8am-8pm weekends. Its only the weights room that can seem crowded, the CV room always has some form of machine free. I went down at 8 tonight and by 815 there was only me and 1 girl in the whole gym area. The price works out at the moment as 15.70 a month i think, with a tenner joining fee. could change by febuary though, they're jsut trying to get more members i guess to as many times of the day the place is literally empty. [which i love ]

So there is a high probability that we meet at the gym  Could you tell me one more thing.. how long does it take to reach headingly campus ? Are there any bus stops next to Opal ?
Reply 9
yea i'm certainly a regular, though i dont use it as a place to socialise usually as i tend to be in my own little world, plus the music they play in there is terrible so i cant survive with my ipod!. The buses are abit confusing for headingly but i'll sum it up as:

there is the 92 bus which departs from a bus stop outside of a neighbouring accommodation called the tannery. It doesn't start running until 940 making it useless for early morning 9am starts , and i think it runs throughout the day every half an hour or something, though it sorta of stops for a few hours mid-day it seems, generally a pain in the arse. This bus initially goes in the opposite direction to uni, firstly heading through the city then taking a road back towards headingly. the only benifit to this bus is it takes you diretly onto campus and drops you right at the library building. I generally dislike it though as during rush hour times i musta been sat on it for at least 30 mins some days.

there is then the 18 and 18a that depart from the main road outside of opal. The service starts early, there is no set times for these but its supposed to be every 20 mins. I've in the past gone out abit late at 835 and one hasn't come in time so i'd end up being very late for lectures. If i have a 9am start i make sure i get out there by 820 just to be certain. This bus doesn't go to the campus but takes you up a road that is near to it. The place where you have to get off isn't obvious at all, though i generally remembered it in freshers week as "after 8 minutes look for some really ****ty looking houses to your left" and get off there, alternatively just look to follow student-y looking types or ask the driver where students usually get off. When you get off you sorta of cut through this snicket that is next to a londis, once through there you see a park and you walk through this park and on the other side is the campus. The walk takes about 5-7 mins i think. I always get this bus as i'd rather walk abit and save time then sit on the cramped 92 [it certainly fills up].

maaan i feel a nerd going into this much detail but seriously on freshers week if someone had have given me a piece of paper saying the above with a map it'd have sorted out alot of confusion [ i missed my very first lectures due to getting lost]
Reply 10
Thanks for your detail explanation . I's very helpful  . I've found a map of bus stops. http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/yorkhumber/leeds/map/Leedsnetworkmap.pdf

According to it, I have to get off at the Queenswood Drive ?? It is the fifth bus stop, isn't? Sorry that I bother you with such stupid questions but I've never been to Leeds  I only hope that I won't get lost on the first day hehe...
Reply 11
yes queenswood drive is the road yes. i've no idea how many bus stops it is from opal but its definetly more then 5!! Also the bus will go past headingly stadium, don't let the signs for "leeds met" all over it make you think you are there yet, the stop you need to get off at is a few minutes after this point.
yeah.. building B does tend to be the most borring in terms of parties and stuff, but apparently the behavior is worse in building B. lol... though thats not a good thing

What do you mean 'the behaviour is worse in bulding B' ?? It's loud or something ? They kill each other there ? hehe  hmm do I need something for self-defense hehe  In which room are you ??

i think you people are giving him the wrong idea, this place is ****ing HUGE, there's no way you can generalise ones experiance depending on what block they're in! i'll admit like when i go in B block sometimes there has been a mess of bin bags piled high on my mates floor, but thats one floor out of many. I live in c24 and even though there have been parties, i never go to them because they finish too early.

Anyway to rolanddz its up to chance wether you'll live with cool people or not, if all that fails then you can come here and translate some of my favourite polish hip hop tracks for me haha:cool:
Reply 15
No problem, I do my best tell me only when hehe . I also agree with you that it all depends on the luck of the draw so I hope to be lucky this time and meet nice, interesting people.

Don't kill me for bothering you with silly questions but I would like to ask you how it is possible that there are 3 buildings A,B,C? Isn't Opal Court as one building ? I assume that Opal is divided into some sectors A,B,C, but are they connected with each other? I mean they have seperate entrance or what ?

I've just read in my Opal Resident's Handbook that I'm not allowed to use oil when I cook is it really true:eek: How do they imagine frying things without oil? It's not allowed to fry anything even using vinegar oil  Damn I think that I loose some weight there  I want to eat out but sometimes it would be nice to prepare some home-made delicacies  How do you cook ?
Reply 16
it is one building and yes it is divided into sectors, probably for organizational purposes. Each block has its own door and post boxes. Your fob key will only work for your block, however you can access other floors by just walking around in a loop, though some floors are not a complete loop due to the architecture of the building. Its easy to get anywhere relatively though.

And the oil thing is just in reference to deep fat fryers, which you are not allowed, and also you are not allowed to use frying pans and pour tons of oil in in order to fry chips etc. Using a splash of oil to grease a frying pan is fine though. To be honest their are loads of little rules and stuff but as long as you use common sense nothing will ever get said.

dont worry about the questions like it gives me excuses not to study for exams haha

So, it won't be as bad as I thought .

I would like to ask you about bedding (one more silly question which gives you excuse not to study ) . In resident's handbook it's written that I have to provide my own bedding for myself, but pillows or quilts are provided aren't they? If they're not, is it possible to rent something at Opal Court or I have to take it with me or maybe buy it in the supermarket?? By the way, are there any supermarkets in the near ??

Gosh! I'm tired and sick to the teeth of these pre-arrival preperations :s-smilie:

Thanks for your answers ;-)

only thing provided is the bed and matress. You need to get the things mentioned. I do not think opal rent the things out, they do sell bedding packs but its probably cheaper to just buy something from a supermarket or store.

I go to the morrisons supermarket which is about a 15 minute walk. Its a pretty disorganised busy place but its the best option for me. There is also a morrisons in kirkstall which is outside leeds, it is HUGE and really nice but you have to get the 49 bus there which takes maybe 10 mins or more during rush hours, and plus the buses are never on time so i never bother. There is also a netto and an iceland near to opal but i've never gone to those as i'm just into the routine of the city center morrisons.

you recieve a welcome pack on arrival which has some good info in it. Also reception can be quite helpfull.

Thank you very much for all your answers. It was very helpful for me. I hope that I will have a chance to do a hand's turn when I arrive
