No, i had my appendix out in a GA operation without having a catheter.

I'm guessing it would depend on the length of your operation. Short quick routine surgery is unlikely to require a catheter, whereas I'm guessing longer surgery would require it

Also depends a bit on whether its a male or female. With women its easy to quickly stick a rigid catheter in at the start of the op in order to drain the bladder completely.

Depends on the ailment that the operation is for, all renal issues mean that a catherter is needed, things like jaw surgery or stuff like that you don't need one. In any case if you do need one then you won't know its been put in.

Thats not true, i had a catheter for 6 weeks, i certainly knew that had been put in. I also knew when they pulled it out... *cringes*

I have only been under GA once, it was for a 2hour operation on my armThere were comlications and it went on for more like 3-4hours. AFAIK they didn't give me one. Don't they tend to ask you to not drink X hours before the operation so your bladder is near empty anyway?
