How would you interpret this question?

If a question says 'explain the principles of ' something like a piece of machinery or whatever does it mean explain how it works? Or does it mean just explain the main rules/principles? I've several of these questions and have got to do like 500-100 words as a short essay on I each one.
Hmm, principles are usually considered to be general 'truths' or (scientific) laws if you like. So I would perhaps link the machinery/ mechanism to a scientific principle (eg Archimedes' principle), start by stating it and explaining the principle, and then applying it to the mechanism in question. I would have thought that would make 100-500 words so sounds like the guidance fits.
