would MChem not be a higher qualification? Master of chemistry?

I meant the MChem is just the BSc course + an extra year. In which case it doesn't really matter what you choose now as entry into the fourth year is usually based on performance whilst at university and normally you will get another opportunity to choose (or not choose) after your first/second year results.

no - it's an 'advanced' degree. They were designed to give people a working knowledge of the subject was well as an academic one and preen peeps ready for a life down t'pit.. I mean in industry.

If you take a year's industrial experience, BSc and MChem's are both 4 years...

The courses are fundamentally different:

hey, MChem is something i've recently been intrested in.
do you do much applied chemistry? eg pharmaceuticals involved in medicine etc and is it quite diverse (eg do you do some biochem too?)?
what kind of things can you do in the 4th year(industry)?

I don't do any pharmaceuticals, medicinal or biochemistry - my degree is in Chemistry with Analytical Chemistry - so I do some applied analytical chem, but thats all, and I don't intend to take any biochemistry at all as thats not particularly part of my course. In your 4th year you do a research project (not a big one like for a PhD but you work as a group with some PhD students I think). Usually if you are doing an MChem program which incorporates a year in industry or abroad, it will be in your 3rd year (I intend to spend my third year in Canada).

I've got mates doing Chemistry (at Cardiff) and they pick after their first year of doing Chemistry whether they want to do a BSc or a MChem ... I think ... but they have to get 60% in the first year to be able to do MChem ... maybe the uni you're thinking of going to does something like that too?

Yup I have to get 50% overall on the year to do the MChem, though have to get 60% on the 3 core units (all the other units need 35% to pass, but obviously I need to do better than that really). Uni's are pretty flexible with the course throughout the first year - you are all doing the same thing for the first year and there's no real difference until you get to your second year, the uni will probably ask for a decision when you come back for your second year.
