Can someone please briefly describe what NATO and the Warsaw Pact were? I can't seem to find an explanation that doesn't consist of three paragraphs of information that is completely irrelevant to the exam I have tomorrow.

NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Consisted mainly of western countries
Safeguarded freedom
Said that the countries would act as allies if war were to break out or if Germany attacked
Not an alliance for economic growth but for protection
Marginalised the USSR and thus worsening relations.

Ok I hope this is helpful!
NATO was an organisation of 12 countries (Western Allies) set up in April 1948. It was signed in Washington DC. It provided military support and it united countries for protection.

The Warsaw Pact was set up by Stalin in 1955. Essentially it was the Soviet version of NATO.
