Yep, Truro is our capital

St. Ives is a very boring place to live though, and no prospects unless you like seasonal work in a surf shop!
yeah i bet. my folks lived in plymouth for 3 years too so i know that place well. good old union street - safe as anything!
can i ask, is your phd funded
infact, we have a lot in common, i spent 3 years in oxford too (at brookes) - gorgeous city, i envy you for going back. fancy trading places with me? you can have my exeter phd and ill take your oxford dphil

Congratulations Nikk... That's great news!...

I thought you were applying to do postgrad medicine... and then I find out you've got a PhD at Oxford and i didn't know you'd applied to do a PhD... so I am a bit surprised...

but it's still great news... my brother is actually doing a PhD atm and he is really enjoying it... one thing that may surprise you (well, it surpised me) was how everyone gets involved in all the clinical trials... and i've just been talked into doing one because it would in some way help my bro... tbh, i didn't really want to do it but it's funny what you agree to for family...

Stanford >>>>>>> Oxford.

Not really.
Stanford = Imperial.
It is not even an Ivy league member ( not that this means very much )
Apart from computer science, not too many departments at stanford stand out.

As you rightly say, Ivy League status means nothing.

Stanford >>> Oxford. The league tables, which do incidentally, mean more than Ivy status, prove it.

Plus, when Oxford has as its products, ignorami such as yourself, it helps qualify my contention. With this said, I have seen you partaking in orderly conversation of late, so I guess you've finally released the contents of your testes satchel...

Bit of a stupid thing to say. Stanford is one of the best all-round universities in the world. Other than CS, its Law and Business schools, for example, both are regularly in the top 3. Maybe you meant as far as undergraduate teaching goes, I'm not sure. Maybe you were taking the piss. And maybe, just maybe, you were trying to bait a certain forum user. But anyway, it's not really fair to equate Stanford and Imperial. I know which one I would rather go to.

Also a bit of a stupid thing to say. Firstly the idea the league tables can 'prove' any such claim, that one university is ">>>" than the other, is perhaps acceptable when one ranks 10th and the other ranks 30th, but when they get very close, and especially when they are in different orders in different tables, its impossible to discern the difference that you imply is there. From the 3 international league tables I have seen, Oxford and Stanford are both in the top ten; Stanford above Oxford twice, Oxford above Stanford once. Hardly the basis for one to say that one is absolutely ">>>" the other (again, whatever that really means). I agree that if I had to pick one that had the edge, I would pick Stanford. But you're not helping the debate by reducing everything to such simplistic terms.

Simplistic terms used for simplistic minds. It's an internet forum, I don't have to have strict evidence to back up my assertions. Stanford is better than Oxfordis the point I was trying to make. The rest was just tendentious.

Anyway, who the hell are you, and what are you doing in this thread?

Yep, I didn't even consider applying for non-funded ones because I am fed up with having no money and living off loans! lol.

Exeter is a lovely city as well (although i've only been there three times so I could be wrong).

Hey dude! Yeah I know lol. The thing is i've had a lot on at uni and so haven't been posting much. I have even more work now but am better organised so feel I have a bit more time for time wasting on TSR

I was going to go for medicine but the work experience put me off. I basically decided that I was far more interested in the science aspect than the medicine. Plus I love research! And I didn't fancy learning the names of all those drugs lol :p: (it gives me a headache just thinking about it!)

I don't think I fancy being a lab rat for new cancer therapeutics! I like my cells just the way they are

Medical sciences division: radiation oncology and biology.

How about you?

The best university to study engineering in the world and only computer science stands out? What are you talking about?

 does that mean you'll end up at the new Biomed Eng building at the hospital? (jealous! ) i'm doing applied maths, applied to biological systems that is, so i hang around biological/medically types a lot.

Tell me about it  No-one understands what I do for them. Not that they care, as long as the right results come out

I'm not sure what they are calling it, but it is a new centre (currently being built), and I know it is opposite a hospital where they are also building a new building that specialises in cancer and is where a lot of the clinical trials will be conducted. Whether that is the same place you are talking about I couldn't say since I am not familiar with the area yet!

Well it cannot be denied that we are definitely the coolest out of the three sciences....

Yeah, should be the same place.

Indeed. I might have to scrounge some data off you so then I can apply my cool math models to it

Absolutely! I never turn down an offer for people to do math for me! haha  As i'm sure you know, many biologists are famed for having mathophobia! :p:
