Why does feminism have such a bad reputation on TSR?

INB4 you say because of me. I used to be a long-time lurker before I ever created an account on here and yet this board was vastly anti-feminism and essentially anti-woman as well. Now I know this site attracts people with immature views for obvious reasons but when it comes to feminism the disdain is unanimous. And the terms feminazi and feminist are one in the same. And here is where the problem lies imo, the conflating of every feminist as being a crazy, evil man hating bitch. I can assure you this is not the case, feminists are largely agreeable people.

I'm a member of two other online communities and they seem to understand what feminism is and the overwhelming majority consider themselves pro-feminism and even identify as feminist. So why the disparity TSR? Is it because TSR attracts a young demographic meaning lots of young boys/men on here simply dislike women because they have prejudices from porn and video games? Is it sexual frustration manifesting itself as misogyny simply because they haven't had the chance to have sex? I know this is what I believe at least, that TSR is very unfair to women.

oh look. Now you're describing yourself
Honestly? I think it's just people jumping on the bandwagon. I didn't know anything about feminism in my late teens either.
Because of people like you :indiff:
The arguments for it are bad. Frankly it has negative effects on society. I advocate a gender neutral gender equality movement.
It's because the feminists that TSR generally hates are the radicals and the newly coined 'white feminists' (who's goals only seem to improve the lives of the middle class white woman). Both of which are either not well educated on ACTUAL feminism and what it stands for or they are misandrists claiming the title of feminism to excuse and try and bolster their views.

It seriously disheartens me - there are a few issues that are spoken about on TSR where feminists are blamed or ridiculed that, as a feminist myself, I wouldn't have considered a priority in feminism right now.

A lot of people seem to just be parroting the same BS because of disinformation propagated by people who want to keep women as second class citizens..

TBF, you didn't need to add 'on TSR' to your title.

Feminism advocates equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women. This by definition means that feminism doesn't believe in gender inequality in favour of women, we just want to be equal not above or below. The priority is for women because from the past to the present women are still not equal to men neither in the West or anyone else.

Feminism is not about bra burning and man hating, like many people seem think it is. As a matter of fact, the whole bra-burning thing never actually happened and is actually just a widely accepted myth. Somehow, misandry, too, became part of the feminist stereotype.

Pretty much. Thing is, a fair amount of anti-feminists out there (and on this forum) aren't actually traditional misogynists... They're just really misled about what feminism is, and think they have to hate it because (they've been told) it hates them. :s-smilie:

Yawn who the hell cares, its always the same argument. 'I want equality not feminism' (okay then good for u, forgetting most people use feminism in this sense).

Women should have equal rights and not be raped.

Not rlly sure what is so difficult about that

The end.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. It is impossible to be a feminist if one hates men, particularly since feminism also includes men’s liberation and other social issues that surround men and transgendered people. Initially, feminism primarily focused on women, but it has grown to include so much more than that.

I'm not an expert on how feminism's progressed but I think that a lot of the stigma is to do with a lot of the vocal, more extreme people who were part of the second wave and their opinions. I grew up thinking that "femenism" was bra-burners who passionately hated men to an unreasonable extent. I mean, I even thought FEMEN was what symbolic of feminism after the suffragettes.
Myself aside, every male I've ever spoken to about feminism bar two automatically associate it with the extreme minority. I'm in sixth form so I'm not going to pretend that I have crazy life experience and know everybody but I reckon the sample size is decent.
So I think that "#killallmen" as a reply to your post pretty much sums it up, prejudiced yes but that's why feminism gets a bad rap. Something like "#killallmen" or "#misandry" which may seem like a joke to people who regularly experience sexism is alienating to people who can't empathise i.e men. And the main demographic on TSR that is really vocal about feminism is probably young men I think, so I think that's how I'd answer your question.

Can you re-word this? I just can't make sense of it.

Yes, there is often activism involved. Yes, people are striving for change. And yes, people, not just women, are angry. All of these are perfectly reasonable. Yet, women still feel uncomfortable calling themselves feminists. Women are ashamed to stand up for their own human rights, as well as the rights of others, simply because of the stigma associated with the term.It is 2014, and it is just now becoming relatively common for women to be unafraid to call themselves feminists. Beyoncé, Emma Watson, Patrick Stewart and Mark Ruffalo are just a few of the celebrities that have recently spoken up for gender equality. Feminism is slowly losing its negative connotation and will hopefully lose its shared reputation with misandry in the near future.

Exactly! I don't know about you, but personally I'm just bored of the whole debate because it's time wasted when we could be educating ourselves or finding new ways to balance societal power.

I feel like stuff such as Free The Nipple and Ban Page 3 as two currently trending examples are made out to be of the utmost importance. Asking why it is that men and women need coloured razors? Things like that. If you don't wanna subscribe to 'girly' razors just buy men's.

There are many more important things going on at the moment that demand feminist's attention and support other than trivial things like the stuff mentioned above.

Problem is that these are pretty much all that's associated with feminism lately - especially in the UK. The trivial fights and arguments rather than issues that affect a wider group of people.
