English gcse think i messed up

Today I was doing my GCSE English exam and for one of the questions I realised that what I was writing was not relevant as I had read the question wrong so I had to scribble it all out and write underneath that were there was no lines that the exam board have provided for you to write on, so after the exam when I told my friend she said that if it's at the bottom of the paper that it doesn't get marked can anybody confirm this or say this is not true

If it says do not write here or something along the lines where you wrote. It won't get marked. If you ran out of space, they will ALWAYS give you more paper to write your answers, so don't get defensive with me
I am pretty sure that you can write not on the lines, as it will still be scanned, but you are not allowed to write outside the grey box and it specifically says "Do not write outside the box". If you didn't write outside the grey box, then it will still be scanned and it should be fine
