I don't personally know, but I assure you if they say it's a requirement, it probably is a requirement unless you cured AIDs in South Africa or have a very good excuse as to why you didn't take physics and maths. CalTech is one of the best universities in the nation and world; they take things very seriously.

I have 3 high school maths, calculus, geometry and discrete and IB math... so was told in first yr undergrad that I didn't need to take math nor would it even fit into my timetable.
The uni has sent other students to Cal tech, but mainly for physics/engineering.
For those subjects I can see maths being key...
But biology?? Surely chem, bio, genetics etc would be good pre-requisities?

Call or email CalTech; they won't mind your questions.

Students studying in edinburgh can actually do an exchange with Caltech?

Reply 5

Wow that cool! You mean Edinburgh students are allowed to go exchange to Caltech?

I know Cambridge students are allowed to go MIT for exchange, provided that they do only the courses that are one year ahead of them there (ie, 2nd yr Cambridge student must do nothing less than 3rd year MIT student work).

Caltech is one of my dream school. I put it as my "homepage" for TSR.

Reply 7

If it's true, why isn't it well publicized on the prospectus? So anyone who could confirm this?

Reply 8

It seems to be true: http://www.international.ed.ac.uk/exchanges/results_int.html?ExchangeID=56. And Caltech students can study at Edinburgh as well.

Yes, 2 engineering students and 1 chemist went from Edinburgh to Cal Tech last yr... They don't seem to use TSR or College confidenital (the US version) so not sure how it went... Heard that it's really competitive at Cal Tech... Hide the books in the library type of behaviour...

You serious?! I mean it may be competitive, but are they so cowardly?!

On their website they advertisement themselves (caltech) as cooperative rather than competitive...

So did the Edinburgh students found it very tough in Caltech?

That sounds like a lovely place to study at :s-smilie:

I've not managed to contact any of the Edinburgh students who went to Cal tech last yr. The comments that I heard about the competitiveness were from students from Canada (who have now graduated) who went there for their undergrad degree.

Most US schools have many more pre-reqs for majors and anvanced study. I have alot of friends at UCLA and Berkeley and for pre-med they have to take several physics classes.

I know Johns Hopkins pre-med students are infamous for ripping the pages out of books in the library so other students don't hurt the curve as much

A friend of mine is doing pre-med at Johns Hopkins....

That looks very cowardly to me...

What are they like 15 years old?
It sounds like a clichéd continuation of that horrible institution named High School.

Happens here too; I've personally seen active attempts at sabotage in my course (computing) at Imperial.

Hey. From Edinburgh Uni on exchange at Santa Barbara. Certainly is true that engineers can go to Caltech, I eventually didn't apply though as I decided I'd quite like to have a social life and free time this year. But if working is your thing, from what I gathered from the people who went the year before me they had a great time, and you really will get a kick ass education.

Reply 18

Great to hear... What course are you taking at Santa Barbara??
How are you enjoying it so far? Did they put you in residence? Or were you able to find your own place? How many students from the univ of Edinburgh are in Santa Barbara?? Are you worried at all about when you get back for 4th yr... in that your 3rd yr results won't count towards your degree. Will this mean you have to work really hard in 4th yr? How did you select the subjects that you're taking in California? Did your DOS in Edinburgh help you? How hard was it to get a place on the exchange?? I gather quite a few apply - especially to any of the Californian unis'

I'd love to do an exchange at Caltech for Mathematics.
