Is QMUL a 'left wing university'?

QMUL for some reason seems like it is very left leaning and I don't have any evidence to back that up. What experiences does anyone else have?

I'm going into my second year at QM, and I can tell you it's a mixed bag. A good number of left wing people, as well as right wing people and people who don't know anything about politics.

But socially it is absolutely liberal

Student-wise it's pretty varied. Institution-wise it is super left wing. My lecturers joke about it all the time because the uni really couldn't be more left wing. Most (if not all) of my lecturers/tutors are lefties, and so am I, but this is obviously an isolated case.

There are all different kinds of political agendas around campus, all of which are respected, but it is massively left wing. It's also an amazing university, so if you're going you'll have a blast. Don't think that right-wingers are shunned or anything because that isn't the case.

I think it's because it is in East London

I thought it was the case that Oxbridge were left wing and the London ones were right wing. I have no idea what I'm talking about though.

The politics department as a whole are incredibly left-wing.

As a politics student at QM i've got to agree with most of the posts above. Although there is a mix, from my experience QM is very left wing and very socially liberal. There is probably a left wing shift among the student age group anyway, but being very inclusive of people from all socio-economic backgrounds and being situated in a traditionally working class part of East London probably contributes to people's political allegiances as well.

You are going to get more a liberal attitude somewhere like east London for the multiculturalism and this feeling of everyone being equal. Oxbridge is very shut off because of being the traditional route for the high-flying careers i.e. banking, law, etc. and so funnels in all those from private schools, i.e. the conservative circles and so is less likely to be 'a mixed bag'.

I know that SOAS does a pursue a heterodox attitude to economics.

"we place great emphasis on introducing our students to some of the alternative (‘heterodox’) approaches to economic analysis." SOAS Economics

It is very good for law with A*AA entry however my parents live in London (although not east) but I've heard very good things about the law department.

Not applying then.

I want a nice white middle class university.

There's a bigger variety of people there than this thread so far is letting on. Yes, there is a large number of South Asians there, but all my lectures have had a massive variety of people from a tonne of places, but yes, generally with a pretty left-wing leaning politically speaking. Very socially liberal and accepting.

Exeter is your best bet then - doesn't get anymore WASP.

I've heard St Andrews is quite nice, too, in that regard.

I'm thinking Camb, LSE, Warwick, Durham and one more. Maybe Exeter but really I don't expect to not get into Camb.
