I don't know anything about History courses, so don't assume this is fact. But I would say Sheffield is much better than Hallam. Its reputation and employability certainly is and I would say that is probably a result of better teaching, research etc. Location-wise they are obviously not to far apart, but one could be in a "rough" area, I suppose.

They're both good since they're both in Sheffield

...but from what I've heard Sheffield Uni is recognised for traditional courses (like History) whereas Sheffield Hallam offers more vocational courses.

This is really a no-brainer. Sheffield is an excellent university. Go there.

I couldn't agree more. Sheffield is better. The proper one.

As was said above, Sheffield has a reputation for more traditional courses (such as history) and is just generally an excellent Uni with excellent employability rates. Hallam is also not bad though and you could do much worse than go there (either way I just read that Sheffield is the safest city in the UK and has excellent nightlife so i guess its a win win situation).

lol.. I've been up there a few times- I loved it. Noticed that the people are much friendlier than in London.. or maybe they were all just having a good day

Is the city really quiet during Easter/Christmas breaks?

I am not sure. I never notice much of a difference.

From students I know, I think many stay up here for the holidays.
