Pros and cons of going to Loughborough

Hi, after getting rejected by cambridge i'm really stuck for deciding which uni to go to. I've applied for social psychology and just want to know some pros and cons about the course and the univeristy in general.

Loughborough's an amazing uni. Anything I don't like isn't directly related to the uni itself so I honestly couldn't think of any cons. Basically, if this is the type of uni you're after then it's perfect. If you're after, for example, a city university, then obviously don't come here.

I do sociology which means I do a social psychology module and it's probably my favourite module. I actually get up every week for it, even though it's at 9am!!! lol. The lecturer makes it really interesting and we have a mix of coursework and exam so it kinda takes the pressue off ie. not putting all your eggs in one basket

I think if you take a visit to Loughborough, you will either connect with it or not...and when I visited for the Open day, I fell in love with it!! Just my ideal surrounding, etc!!

You just get a feel for the place tbh. I visited all my 6 choices after I'd got my offers and this was the place I just knew I wanted to be at

One massive con is the expense - I find Loughborough fairly expensive as a university - things like buying food on campus, and such, are rather pricey (even the union shop). Sports facilities (such as the gym and pool) are expensive to use recreationally as well. Accomodation isn't that cheap either, and seems rather complicated in terms of pricing! The other thing is the lack of a decent union bar - JC's is small and not very comfortable, and I prefer to go and have a nice quiet drink with friends rather than go to the union club nights all the time. The only place to go is EHB, and then we're back to the pricey issue...

Also, be warned - Loughborough is half the size of Cambridge (and so not as pretty!).

 Welcome back, Sarah!

I can agree that things on campus can be considered fairly pricey (in comparison to what you might expect from a uni), but to be fair it could be a lot worse. At least most things are only a short walk away in town, and there are plenty of decent bars around.

Other than that, Loughborough is simply loveable

Really? Compared to what my sister at Portsmouth and my best friend at Exeter pay for things (especially accomodation) Loughborough seems cheap...

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm going to a social psychology open day on the 14th of february (girlfriends not happy!), so should be able to get a good feel for the place and the course then. Anyone else going? I'm definitely after a capmus uni but I heard one problem is the unis out of town so its hard to get to good places for the night life, any truth in that?

it depends on the uni - like lancaster campus isnt within walking distance of the town, whereas loughborough is. taxis arent expensive though into lufbra it is about £1 each if going in a group. its obviously not going to be brilliant nightlife, but persoanlly i love it, wherever you go you will see people you know, and tbh its really not that bad at all! but then again i come from a fairly remote town in the country, so if you are form a city, you would probs find it v quiet.

backing up what other people have sed, i absolutley love the uni and the place and my course. the only things i have had problems with are personal and not related to the uni itself - ie they cud have happened anywwhere.

but yeah, see what you think when you come visit - as soon as i visited i knew i wanted to come here!

Lol sorry  I think it's *very* different being a postgrad to an undergrad here, probably why I notice the price of things more (as i have no loan), and the lack of decent union bar. Incidentally, I put Lboro down as my insurance choice when I applied for undergrad degrees, and I think would have liked it far more had I come here then

One thing I do like though is how close Loughborough is to places like Nottingham, Brum and such. Makes it nice and easy to go out for a day at the weekend (and the trains round here are relatively cheap too!).

EHB is well cheap for food!!!!

It's only cheap if you eat the burgers :p:

Things like sandwiches aren't cheap, and when I only get an hour over lunchtime it isn't time to get to EHB and queue up and wait for hot food

One of my houseies (well, two) do Social Psych and they love it. Don't know why, haven't asked them, but they do. Will ask more if I remember.

Im in my second year here now, and i think its great.

Again, i just really liked the feel of the place on the openday, really liked the campus, the space and that. And i really liked my deptment, everyone was freindly and interesting/enthusiatic (not allways the case), and they seamed to have really good facitlys (also not always the case).

18months in, and im still loving it, and can confirm all my inital thoughts where true!

The town isnt huge, but with several night clubs, a stack of bars, and more pubs that i can count the nightlife could be a lot worse! There also a decent number of shops for basicaly all you need, and notingham/lecester/derby are all a short train ride away.

On campus you the union, which is a massive four room nightclub open 7days a week, with a massive number of diffrent nights on each week.
- And then theres JC's (the union pub), and several bars run by Imago.

The unions shops are a little pricey, but for the convenece of them all being soo close, thats what you get.
- And if you walk a few yards out of campus there are plenty of corner shops, saisburys is right up the road on the nearside of the town, with tescos only a little further to walk.

In terms of a "quite plabe to drink" sarah, have you tryed towers bar, or moving off campus, the swan, or the pagent, which are both fairly close. Or else the Phantom?

I know Sarah's been to the Phantom as a. she lives right by it and b. we've been! Would hardly describe it as 'quiet' though.

The phantoms not really that quite no, thats why i listed it last.
- However, its sort of more that way inclined. You can sit and have a drink on the sofas without having to shout to be heard. And the musics usally quite good.

I somehow got it into my head sarah lived on campus? Obvously not!

Lol Daniel, I live in the Printhouse, so right by the Phantom (and I do quite like it in there, it's my kind of place) I've been in towers bar too (unfortunately when football was on, so not so quiet!) but like EHB, it's run by Imago so the prices are hiked up a little. Not saying I don't like those places, just be nice if it were owned by the union and therefore had union prices!!!
Reply 18
Yeah, i figured you might like the phantom, not that ive ever met you!
- Good old Imago. I do know you you mean, the union should take over towerbar, lol.

Daniel
the phantom has outside seats...so sit there if its not raining or freezing
