And what makes Architectural 'Technology' different than 'Architecture' by itself ?

I think basically architectural technology is the more technical side and they will know more about construction when they've completed their course than us architecture students!

I assume that many people who graduate with a BSc in Architectural technology will want to go on to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT, used to be BIAT). This would mean that you can call yourself an architectural technologist.
There are also Architectural technicians who don't have degrees- often HNCs or similar or do have a degree but maybe in construction management.

Also the Arch Tech course is a 3 year degree, whereas architecture will take a lot longer than that which I'm sure you already know!

I work with quite a few architectural technologists (working in my gap year) and they are just as good at their job as their architect colleagues, in fact some are a lot better.

However the downside of architectural technology to architecture is that you get paid a lot less regardless of your knowledge. :frown:

I choose Huddersfield as my firm choice to do architectural technology this year.

Can anyone tell me what its like studying this course ?

The tutors have been quite relaxed about it in my interviews almost promoting it as a easier alternative to a architecture course. I originally wanted 2 do architecture but thought the technolgoy course ws more specific to me now im not to sure and might be looking to change course when i get to university.

Don't worry, the first year of architecture and architecture technology is the same. In technology you do more reports and researching writing while architecture will be more focus on drawing.

But the advantage is: you can switch course after the first year.
example: technology to the architecture
or architecture to technology.

I feel technology puts more pressure on the student than the architecture.

Very true. A friend of mine never got further than HNC (Building Studies) before becoming a draftsman. TBH he's the best "architect" they have in his practice - knows his ****, knows his regulations, and is a damn fine PM as well. I'd sooner work with him than any of the RIBA's in his office. And my brother who is a very senior building inspector at the local council loves it when he gets in applications from this guy because he knows what he's talking about - he groans when he sees some of the crap put in by the RIBA's in the same company.

I read on another forum that a guy completed 3 year course in Architectural Technology, then got a transfer to Lincoln to do BA Architecture for the 3rd year. He then skipped the year out because he already had experience and did the part2 after he's part1.

Software like what? AutoCAD?... That costs alot of money. I got a burnt copy of a second year student, because its so ridiculously expensive!!!!.

You can easily download things nowadays.
