Well if the points minimising method is used then a blocker would be tactical decision. If the original filler method is used then a blocker is disadvantageous.

Up to you to decide on the method - I'd suggest that blockers are a bad idea because the gain is less than what you could lose - but I don't see why you should complain if you get Westwood after putting it in 2nd, after all it is your second preference.

Thanks very much for the help!

how likely is it to get cryfield, provided it is the first option?
Ok a few questions. Reading through the thread I see that a lot of people have chosen Jack Martin. I really want an ensuite and would prefer JM, but after seeing the number of people choosing JM should I just go for Arthur Vick to be safe?

And if I want an ensuite, should I say 'yes' to that question on the accom form which asks whether you want a quiet area or not? I am quite sociable but if saying 'yes' gets me the ensuite...

Also, I will be 17 when I join, will this have any effect of the accomodation I am alloted?

Choose whatever halls you think is right. Perhaps more people choose JM on here due to what has already been written in this thread. Perhaps people who don't read this thread may choose AV over JM. Perhaps not. But both are still over subscribed - I'm not sure what the figures are.

Being 17 will probably be a large factor in the allocation (there is an unusually large proportion of people who started uni under 18 living in JM and AV). However, I do know someone who turned 18 in December but got third choice Westwood. I think they firmed Warwick. But overall I think your chances of getting your first choice are increased slightly by being under 18.

With regards to quiet/loud area for JM at least, I know people who have put both loud and quiet, it doesn't really matter - perhaps there is a more correct one to choose :iiam:

Hey there, seems like u know your stuff so i was wondering if you could help me...

I am applying for accommodation and i think i'm going to go for this:
1) rootes
2)tocil
3) whitefields
4) cryfield
5) Dont really know

I was wondering if you could tell me a few pros and cons for tocil and rootes, and what are my chances of getting these?

For my third and 4th choices, i'm unsure about which to be 3rd choice and which to be 4th... so some help on that would be nice..

I am going to be studying maths, so proximity to maths department and gym is quite a big plus (hence roots and tocil).

Thanks alot, + rep for reply

More pros and cons here (specifically there are some of Tocil and Rootes).

Rootes in first place should have a very high success rate. There are some cases times where you won't get them (I'm not exactly sure why, perhaps because they ticked 'quiet area'?).

I must point out here that Rootes is very long (see this map). Note that Rootes stretches along C6 and D6 - if you end up in Old Rootes you will probably be as far away from Maths as Cryfield and Heronbank. If you end up in New Rootes, however, you will be the same distance (roughly) as Whitefields and Jack Martin. Sadly, you can't choose between the blocks.

Obviously Tocil is the most ideally located block this year if you study Maths. You're pretty much close to everything else as well (I'd say anything like Whitefields and JM1 are the best located blocks in general when considering all lecture rooms/study areas).

OK, now Cryfield and Whitefields:
The sharing situation is roughly the same (about 6 to a bathroom and 12 to a kitchen). From what I have seen, kitchens in Cryfield are larger, but Whitefields has a lounge in each flat.
For you, Whitefields is in a better location.
Cryfield is corridor, Whitefields is flats. The Whitefields flats are completely isolated, meaning that the 17 Whitefields flats each are in a separate building and have their own front door that can only be opened by the 12 residents who have a key. Conversely, there are three Cryfield blocks with about 80-90 in each block. Front door of each block has a lock which can only be opened by the 80 residents living inside. Once inside, you can access any corridor in the building, each room has a lock which you can leave unlocked, allowing people to pop in and say hello.

I would personally choose Cryfield over Whitefields because I believe that the social situation is in general better in Cryfield (due to the flats/corridor).

5th choice can be: Westwood, one of AV/JM/Benes, one of HB/LS

Ok great thank you so much for all the help!
Time to apply now!!
Anyone got some pics of Tocil ?
Thanks in advance.

& am I right in thinking it's just like a flat - so you have a shared kitchen, bathroom, lounge/dining room with 6 - 12 bedrooms all contained behind one door ?

Yeah - shared kitchen, 2 or 3 bathrooms in the flat, from what I remember of the place I don't think there is a separate lounge area, although there should be a dining table in the kitchen. There are 6 flats in each building, each building has 2 entrances. Each entrance has a front door with a lock. Through the front door you then have access to a staircase which leads to one flat on each floor (there are three floors in each building). Each flat also has a lock on the front door. Then you are inside (each room then has its own lock).

Sadly I don't have any photos.

Communal areas should still be cleaned frequently.

Not sure about rooms though.

I love how they give you 3 pointless images of the outside of the block, then like 1 picture of inside it.

wanted to send some photos but won't let you upload. so send me your email address if you'd like some photos.

essentially tocil is great apart from that it is a bit of a gamble. if you get a good flat and a good flat next door then you're fine. however, there is a chance you might be with some people you don't like and then you're stuck with them in your flat. at least in rootes you can just walk down the corridor and meet brand new people.

that's the only real downside to tocil that CAN occur. i was really lucky and love my flat and the flat next door to bits. there are 3 types of flats, 6 man, 9 man and 12 man. there are 6 flats per block. 6 man is always one of the two top floor flats. 9 man is for the flat that is shared with the resident tutor. which is fine as long as they're not too harsh (i was in the 9-man, it was fine). and the other 4 are all 12 man. there are always 3 bathrooms (all have toilets + shower (and 1 bathroom will have a bath)) per flat. there were always at least 2 bathrooms to choose from for me - you'll never have a problem with in-use bathrooms in tocil.

the rooms are a good size and are bigger than a lot of the en-suite rooms (if you discount their totally pointless and overpriced bathrooms). also bigger than rooms in new and old rootes. westwood is one of the only accommodations i have been to where the rooms are bigger but that's cos they live miles away - only fair. there is always one (and sometimes 2) rooms in each flat that are slightly bigger (i had that last year, was great) - they're the end rooms, so you might get that which is lucky. only thing is tocil has no sink. bit of a bummer really... but i managed for a year and never thought about it really. and anyway, if you have a sink it is always a hilarious joke for your 'friends' to lock themselves in your room and pee in your sink so i guess you'll be avoiding that problem.

the kitchen is fairly decent. you won't be sharing with like 15-16 people like in rootes so hopefully your fridges/freezer won't be too full. we never really had a problem except occasionally our freezer got quite full. kitchens are really sociable as well but i think you get that everywhere - cooking facilities are rarely fought over unlike rootes.

and location. tocil is pretty much the closest thing to everything - if that makes sense. it's bang in the middle. not far at all from SU. i tihnk the closest residence to the library and lecture halls and stuff. one of the closest accommodations to tesco (this is really handy!! trust me). even though it's close to stuff it's still really quiet and out of the way and the scenic area is home to many ducks which is always pleasant cos they're totally harmless and really nice to people.

yeah that's about it. lemme know if you want to know anything. i would totally recommend tocil - as long as you don't mind the gamble of flatmates. playing it safer would be rootes - but there are a number of disadvantages that i can list as long as what i've written here.

hope that helps.

I would love it if you would rewrite this a little so that it is in this format:

Over the past month I've started to revamp the first few posts of this thread to create the ultimate accommodation resource for first year accommodation. Now I want your input into what you think your accommodation is like. What's good, whats bad and even some photos. Just spend 10 minutes of your time writing about the halls you are staying/stayed in and I will give +rep for your efforts (perhaps more if you have got photos).

An example response if given below. I need a 2-3 sentence summary and for the pro/con bit you can write a paragraph or write it bullets, it doesn't really matter. Photos are not required but if you have any that will be awesome :h: Just post your stuff in the thread and you will get credit in the first two or three posts of this thread (as well as +rep).

[field="in??" Can="Can" you="you" fill="fill" me="me"]Block:

+Rep if you do (and +rep again if you add photos - you can use an image hosting site like http://tinypic.com/ :h:)

I'll put your review and your photos (if you don't mind) in the guide at the start of this thread so it will be easy to find and help other people applying for accommodation in the future.
Is Westwood a lot farther than Heronbank from the Students' Union?(even though it says 15-minute walk for both on the warwick website,it seemed so much different on the campus map!!!).I'm trying to decide my 3rd and 4th choices.Btw, how isolated are the paths leading to these halls? And how far are both from Tesco?

ps-do i have to cross the road if i live in Westwood?I think i saw a traffic light on the campus map.hmmmmm

From here.

In short, there's a random computer ballot to say whether you will be on or off campus. Then another computer ballot to allocate which halls you will be in. Finally, the warden looks at your statements to group you with other students.

Hi,

Would like to know which accommodation do you recommend for me?

Knowing that I'm a postgraduate (MSc in Engineering management in the WMG department) and would like to live the closest to supermarket and gym.

Btw, I don't care if it's en suite or not; because I was so disappointed last year when I chose to live in an en-suite flat at King's college... flatmates where like ghosts!

Heronbank is generally closer to the SU than Westwood - perhaps there is some overlap but if you end up in B/C/D/E blocks of Westwood then these are the furthest away (the most northerly on the map). Perhaps G/H/K/L blocks are at a comparable distance to Heronbank, but on the whole the distance to the SU from Westwood is nearer 20 minutes.

See this map for the position of Tesco and note that Westwood is much closer to Tesco than Heronbank.

The paths are well lit - Heronbank to main campus is a winding path through Warwickshire countryside with lamp posts every few metres. There are also emergency beacons along that path (there was an incident that occurred around 2003-5 along that path that prompted raised lighting and the beacons). Similarly, Westwood you will need to walk down Kirby Corner Road and cross at a Pelican crossing. You can then take the path via University House down to main campus. It's well lit and campus is a very safe place to live in. I'd say the path from Heronbank is more isolated than Westwood, mainly because the land around it is green belt and undeveloped.

Claycroft and Tocil are nearest Tesco and the Gym respectively.

You can see this map which will point out the other two accommodation blocks you can choose (Heronbank and Lakeside) along with Tesco (on the right) and the Sports Centre containing the gym (near Tocil).
