Hi, I'm applying for Warwick accommodation and one of the questions is:
Do you want to live in a quiet area?

I'm just wondering how quiet are the quiet areas and how loud are the other areas. I don't particularly want to live in a quiet area, but then I wouldn't want to live in a very loud area either.

Many thanks.

Check out this post I made a couple of weeks ago on what I think quiet areas could be classed as.

See also the guide at the start of The Warwick Accommodation Thread if you haven't already.

Wow, can't believe they ask that so bluntly. There should be an 'in the middle' option. I reckon you should put loud area. If you say quiet you run the risk of being in a block/flat with everyone who put quiet, so it could be a bunch of really boring people. Whereas in reality (unless you are allergic to noise) there aren't really any places anyway on campus I would consider unbareably loud.

Stick with loud! Loud noises!!
I was in a 'loud' area and only kept awake maybe 5-7 nights over the course of the whole year. Most of those were in freshers.
Finally got around to applying for accommodation. Here's what I requested in order:

Tocil
Jack Martin
WestWood
Whitefields
Rootes
Heronbank
Isn't Rootes still going to be a building site this year? (2010-2011) or is the majority of the noisy construction over now?

Ok, last minute decision, Jack Martin vs Arthur Vick. Really confused.

They're gonna build four 4-storey buildings and it won't be finished until next summer. Apparently they were putting the 3rd and 4th cranes up earlier this month. So probably the foundations will be laid but they still have to build the rest of it next year.

It will mainly affect Rootes D-I and M-P on the south side as that is the part that will directly face the construction work.

[post="26174908"]I thought you have already applied[/post] and chose JM

AV has larger rooms, a large lounge but smaller kitchen than JM. Both have the same standard of domestic service - they are managed by the same branch of Warwick Accommodation. AV is £3 more expensive. JM is considered on the whole to be more sociable. Both are 30 week lets and have the lockable cupboard, as well as trunk rooms for international students over the holidays. Location is dependent on where your lectures are but JM1 is generally closer than AV to most things while JM 3 is roughly the same location as the AV blocks. Both are first preference oversubscribed, just that one could be more oversubscribed than the other.

Read the reviews of JM and AV at the start of this thread if you haven't already (along with the rest of the guide?).

:holmes: I see what you did there :ahee:

:five: and +rep for having same firm and insurance  hopefully we both get into firm

Don't put metal in a microwave. #1 top tip.

You can't microwave whole eggs in a microwave, it will probably explode. Similarly the cake in a mug thing on Facebook doesn't really work.

Follow instructions on ready meals. You normally will need to pierce some holes in the packaging with a knife or fork.

Two basic settings: Defrost or high. Sometimes you might need to use something in between. Keep an eye if you need to defrost stuff as you can end up cooking it. If you need to reheat food, 2-3 minutes should normally be enough (on high), just make sure it is hot/stir it halfway through so that it cooks evenly.

why?so it's no cake for me then?????(unless i steal yours.muahahahahaha:creep: )
placenta medicae talpae
They create 'hotspots', so stirring is a must!
Linked with that one, if you're doing something like packeted rice (don't reheat rice btw!), then make sure all the grains are separated first, and there are no huge clumps
The more water in something, the more quickly it will cook.
Trying putting a spoon in and then touching it ... is a good way to find out what the spoon is made of. If it was made out of wood, then you won't end up with nth degree burns

Also ... with people who're named like Defying Gravity and Destination Unknown at Warwick, it's gotta be quite a place! :yep:

so i'll need a REALLY REALLY long wooden spoon???how safe is it to open the microwave halfway and stirring????lol....should i be wearing mittens???hahahahahaha

and with a name like placenta medicae talpae,we're gonna rock the west midlands!!!!!!!!!:woo:
I must say, when you melt sugar (if you happen to be making a caramel or something) and dip a metal spoon in, no matter how yummy it looks, never dip your finger into the melted sugar. It's insanely hot :colonhash:
Anyone know the Applicants/Places numbers/ratio for the halls or where to find them? I'm looking for JM/Tocil especially.

.

Quoted 'cause you might.
Has anybody heard back yet?
I've got a question. How likely is it that I'll get a place in JM if it's my first choice? I'm an international student if that makes a difference.

now u just made me wanna do that:eek3:
Hi everyone,
I'd like some advices from those of you who have experienced some of the halls.
First, I have some expectations regarding the area in itself :

A relatively clean hall (especially when it gets to the bathroom and the kitchen) and be able to breathe. In other words, I'd like to avoid confined rooms and corridors.

A quiet place, especially at night. Soundproof walls are welcomed as well, since I play the guitar and love music.

Not overpopulated kitchens : I cook a lot !

Then about the people :

Pleasant community atmosphere : not excessively extrovert hallmates who get drunk each night (I'm not into binge drinking at all), but not introvert, depressing and self-isolating people.

I know this is a gamble but I hope to live with some open minded and talkative mates. I like to discuss with people who assume their ideas and critically engage with issues.

To sum up my expectations : a peaceful and lively place where people are sociable and open minded.

Now some questions :

Between the falt/corridor type, which one is the most likely to suit me ?

Would AV/JM be better to meet open minded people than LS/HB ? On the other side, is LS/HB as full of introvert international student as sterotypes say ?

Between Tocil and Westwood which one is the less noisy ? The most recent ? Which one has the largest common areas ?

Same questions with Whitefields and Cryfield.

If I put Rootes in 5th position, are my chances not to get Rootes greater than my chances not to get Cryfield/Whitefields ?

Which non ensuite hall is the most likely to suit me ?

Which non ensuite hall (apart from Rootes, which I want to avoid) is the most likely not to suit me ?

Where are most of the humanities student allocated ? Where am I likely to meet student that study one of my 3 courses (I'm a PPEist) ?

Finally, is this ranking coherent with what I've been writing so far ?

1.

Arthur Vick (rather than JM, but not sure)

2.

Lakeside

3.

Tocil

4.

Westwood

5.

Rootes (in order not to get Whitefields or Cryfield, given that I am likely not to be given Rootes)

I know this is quite a long post to answer. Many thanks to those of you who would do so.
