Oh yeah...does anyone know about the bus service for off-campus students? And night buses, taxis? I have no idea how I'm going to be able to afford travelling on and off campus every day/night :s-smilie:

I can't pay for Liberty Park on the 25th either so I'm gonna tell them that before hand. If they don't accept it I'll get Warwick accommodation people to make em hopefully. Cos I'm pretty sure most people won't get their maintainence loan for ages since Warwick starts late :/

If you live in Earlsdon, then you will most likely be getting the 12, which offers a yearly pass and relatively frequent services onto campus. It's also a shorter distance than the U1. There is the issue with buses at night, but it can be solved by splitting a cheap taxi back after a night out in the Union.

HEFCE fines institutions £3700 per student if they overrecruit- so Warwick may be fined this year.
It's ridiculous...my maintenance loan doesn't even cover the amount they're asking for. And that's meant to cover food and general living costs for the whole term. There's no way people without grants could live there! And I'm meant to have one but student finance have said nothing about it. They'd be way better off asking for the money on the 25th October or something.
But yeah, I gave up on the Liberty Park dream :frown:

The main buses going to the university are the 12 and the Unibus. They are operated by different companies so tickets on one won't work on the other. In general I think the 12 is cheaper but I can't quite remember. Of course it will also depend on where you are living. Oh and there are plenty of taxis around. You can just flag them down or go to a taxi rank.

Thanks, apparently the houses we're looking at are near to the number 12 bus stop
That fine sounds painful!

If you are going to take up that house in Earlsdon, you will need to be looking at the 12 with Travel Coventry. Go to the TravelCoventry website and get the £215 3 term pass for the Coventry region. That bus pass will get you on all Travel Coventry buses and also will get you to Leamington. Last bus will probably be around midnight, but check the website for the specific bus times.

Taxis will cost under £10 from Campus to Earlsdon.
Anyone who got given the Westwood sharing - did anything change on the Warwick accomodation site for you when you accepted it? Mine hasn't so I emailed them again just to make sure I accepted it properly.
for anyone @ paradise: who wants to group up and organize smth with a cab driver to pick us up every morning???
Block: Westwood, Hampton Hall

Summary: 'Westwood' Consists of 8 blocks (Bericote, Compton, Dunsmere, Emscote, Gosford, Hampton, Knightcote and Loxley), each block containing 60-70 rooms. So it's small enough for you to foster some real loyalty to your hall, and actually get to know everyone in your hall. But large enough to ensure you'll definitely find someone you'll get along with. The mix of students you get is partially down to luck, and partially down to what you wrote about yourself on your accommodation application. Personally I found it quite a good mix. Some nights we'd go out til 4am, and my halls went into Leamington Spa and Coventry for nights out regularly, they'd usually go out at least 3 times a week, so if you're into that, you'll have loads of fun. But there are quite a lot of more 'down to earth' people who just like a pint now and then and don't go nuts. That's the beauty of it really, when you're in rootes you're surrounded by self-professed 'partay animals' and when you're in Arthur Vick you're surrounded by people taking their education seriously. Westwood has a really comfortable mixture.

Pros:
* Mega huge rooms: The rooms are 5 metres long and 3 metres wide, so easily the biggest rooms on campus (apart from those delicious double-storey rooms in benefactors, but those are few). One of my favourite features about the rooms last year was the windows, they were three meters wide (the width of the entire room) and 2 meters tall, so you got LOADS of lovely natural light and usually a pretty nice view outside as well. They're all double glazed as of 2010.
* More Furniture and storage than other halls: You get a whole load of furniture. Including a massive 2-metre long desk (I miss that desk so much, it was absolutely huge!), a wall-mounted bookshelf, a large chest of drawers AND a full-sized wardrobe AND a bedside table with drawers, so plenty of storage. And two noticeboards (Plus your standard sink and mirror) - (My friends in rootes got a tiny 120cm wide desk, only one noticeboard and no chest of drawers)
* Another thing you will get that many halls don't is a large common room, (I think some had vending machines and pianos in them?!, just hearsay, ours didn't) which is a great area to socialise.
* You also have your own barbeque (one per hall) that you can use in the summer term for big barbeques on the green. Also you won't have to walk to the laundry rooms outside Rootes to do your Laundry, as each hall has its own washing machine, tumble dryer and airing cupboard.
* Being slightly isolated from main campus has its benefits: you don't feel so 'trapped in the bubble', and Westwood students are usually the first who dare venture off campus for shopping and nights out.
* Also, the 'Westwood campus' has it's own costcutter, cafe, and music rooms (complete with it's own drum kit).
* You're the closest to tesco, literally a five minute walk away, great for those midnight-runs for nibbles and drinks.

Cons:
* I suppose the famous 'downside' to Westwood is the distance, although ex-westwooders will all furiously defend the distance. One thing that really annoyed me was the 'lololo you're in westwood, gutted you is soooo far away' comment you will inevitably get from some lucky git from Rootes: the reality is, you're a 10-15 minute walk away, the same distance as Lakeside and Heronbank. Compared to Rootes and Tocil, which are practically built on top of the SU, it's far, but compared to student halls all over the country, you're still pretty close. The way I always saw it: when I was in sixth form, taking my A levels, it was a 40 minute walk to school, and I thought that was pretty close! 10 minutes is nothing.

It's a fairly pleasant walk too, past the sports fields and the Learning Grid, there's a short video of the walk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sQot_ih2oM.

It will also be great if you can get any photos of the halls :yy: When you move it the place should be tidy ahaha.

Nothing changed for me, so I called and they told me, since it's only temporary, we don't have to sign anything (they also sent me an email later). They also said they'd send further instructions this week (called last week) but so far, I haven't gotten anything from them. If you reply to the Westwood Sharing email saying yes (or I accept, as I did later because my first response was more or less "I'd be happy to share my room with somebody else" lol), you have on campus accommodation. I guess they'll tell us something once we arrive at the university.
I might be able to head out early to take up the Whitefields offer, but I have still received no email from accommodation, and they still won't answer the phone. Is it actually worth it? Because what I'd be hoping is to end up finding accommodation off-campus but shared with other undergraduates, not to show up at Warwick and be shimmied off to accommodation shared with postgrads or others due to limited choice, given that if that's the case, it's something I could easily do from here in France over the internet.

Does anyone else intend on going to Whitefields or will it just be a ghostown?
Hi, I also have a temporary offer at whitefields, just wondering who is in the same boat? And if you're planning to take it up or try and find accommodation online beforehand? Also, as I'm gonna need to find a house where is it best to look: in coventry, or leamington? And how long will it take to get into uni/ whats in the area etc.? Thanks, any help is really appreciated

Canley/Cannon Park are areas within walking distance to campus, perhaps 10-20 minutes walk depending which place exactly.
Tile Hill is cyclable/there is a bus service if you are near the 12 bus stop, perhaps 10-15 minute cycle or 10 minute bus.
Earlsdon/Chapelfields is a popular student area, near the 12 bus stop, about 15 minutes bus.
Fewer people that I know are staying near central Coventry.
Leamington - bus takes around 30 minutes, perhaps more in peak times. You can choose between the U1/U2 and the 12 for the bus to uni, U1 goes via the A46 and should be faster than going via Kenilworth like the 12, U2 does.

As for nightlife off campus, Leamington has more to offer with a fair number of bars and clubs in the area. Living in Canley/Cannon Park means you will be close enough to go to union events while Earlsdon is a 15 minute walk from Coventry centre, but really it's a fair distance to have to walk to get to Kasbah (30 minutes away).
this is totally irrelevant but i just noticed that you ('TheTallOne') come from the most awesome town ever
...also anyone else here going to Liberty Park? they haven't sent me confirmation yet, but i phoned them yesterday and they said i had a room, but they hadn't allocated room numbers yet and i would get details next week
