Was in JM3 yesterday and they were installing a new lift

Post room has gone, not sure if the lift was operational today or if they did a kitchen refurb.
You know what - most of the people who badmouthed Rootes are ************. It depends entirely on who you're in with, though tbh, even party people are willing to shut up if you ask politely. And the noise from the SU etc? Earplugs.

The only bad things here are the kitchen and the heating. 16 people on one crappy cooker, and the radiators on all day and off all freezing night. But what the hell? We're paying practically bottom rate, this is value for money and really good fun. Even if you're a generally studious person, if you make a concession and come out clubbing once or twice, everything is fine.

Why were we all so worried? (Those of us that were...)

Yeah, why were you worried? Anyone who has lived there will tell you it's awesome.

Thanks for the photos!
Just wondering to all the freshers, after your first week at Warwick do you see yourself living with any of the people in your house/corridor in the second year? I get on pretty well with all the people in my house, and over the week we've done a lot of stuff together (off-campus as well as on) but there's only really one guy I could see myself living with for a year (or possibly more)

It's still early doors, you don't even know them yet!
You do NOT need to know who you want to live with next year until at least Christmas. Don't stress about that yet.

However, I am smug and safe in the knowledge that I know exactly who I'm living with next year and hopefully where too. Score!

How's Italy?

Terrifying and awesome in equal measure. Italian as an actual used language is so different to the Italian we learnt in class last year, and it's incredibly intimidating trying to get to know people and put yourself across in another language (I have an increased respect for everyone at Warwick who is studying in their second/third/fourth/whatever language for their whole degree). BUT it's Italy. Which means the country is beautiful, the food is amazing, and I've met a load of really interesting people.

Yeah I was worried about that too - but I guess it's through societies and course that you meet those people?

Well I'll be living with one of my closest uni friends who I met through my course. Most people I know are living with ex-hallmates or coursemates.
Old Rootes D - ground floor.

Note that for some reason I have swish New Rootes furniture. Score! :woo:

My Review of Old Rootes

It's pretty early in the term, so I can only give an initial assessment.

First - to address the common gripes.
1. Noise - I'm actually finding my nights here quieter than they were at home. Sure there are sometimes people partying, shouting, having fun - but I propose three easy solutions to this. One: earplugs. Two: join in. Three - ask nicely for quiet.
2. The Rooms - as previously noted, some rooms (such as my own) have the New Rootes furniture. And, tbh, the ones that don't aren't so bad. They're still a hell of a lot better than Cryfield.
3. The Building Works - I am right next to them, and haven't noticed them once.

Now then, some good old pros and cons.

Pros
- Big rooms
They may not be the biggest, but they're plenty big enough. Especially if you keep them tidy
- Communal Atmosphere
In 2 weeks, my corridor has become my surrogate family. Remember that you don't have to like everyone in your family, but they are there for you.
- Location
Perfect. Everything I need is close by.
- Price
Helluva better deal than many of the halls. Am paying £83 a week for basically the same as JM, but with better rooms.
- Bathrooms
We have one of the bigger floors, with 16 sharing 3 toilets, 2 showers, and 2 baths with showers over them. It's actually pleanty! I haven't had to wait for anything so far.
- Narrow Corridors
They may seem prison-like during the day, but believe me, when you're pissed later on they make it much easier to get back to your room

Cons (all halls have them)
- Kitchen.
I can't say much more on this. As someone who loved to cook before coming here, I really do hate the kitchen. (Tiny, poorly designed, really hard to keep clean.)
- Noise.
Yes it's there. I can generally hear the bass coming out of the SU until about 3am. It's just a question of dealing with it.
- Fire Alarms
We have had 3 over 2 days, though I have to say that its not so terrible as I expected. Everyone wants to sleep at some stage.
- Mobile Reception
This is without a doubt THE MOST ANNOYING thing. According to a physics student friend, the building is a Faraday Cage, making it very difficult to find spots with reception. They are there though. Eg, the kitchen has none at all, but my bedroom does.

Comparisons With Other Halls
So far I've been to Cryfield, New Rootes, and JM.
Cryfield - we have the definite advantage here. Our rooms are way bigger and nicer, as are our bathrooms. The only 2 things I envy of Cryfield are their social areas (they have nice, big common rooms with lots of comfy chairs, we don't have anything like this), and the price. Given the choice, though, I would pay the couple of quid extra for Rootes.
New Rootes - I only went in the communal areas, and I have to admit that theirs are much nicer. But, you have no choice as to whether you end up in New or Old Rootes - it's just luck.
Jack Martin - Very, very nice buildings. The kitchens are just gorgeous, and this is the main point I envy. The corridors are wide, the walls thick, and they have swish lifts. The rooms, though, disappointed me - due to the space taken up by the en-suite, they're tiny! Also - the atmosphere was completely dead to the point of creepiness.

Hope the above points help!

Hey, thanks for doing that  Any chance you could reword it slightly to make it more like this style? The pros and cons are fine (and obviously the photos) but just the summary would be great as a few months ago people wanted a tl;dr version :p:

Don't know whether this thread is still going on but basically...

I'm going to Warwick next year confirmed (I'm on my gap year now), and what is the best place for someone like me who is 'moderate'?

I like a mix of things - I'm not the sort of person who will, or wants to go out every night, but equally I won't lock myself in my room and sit in the corner. I don't really want a crazy loud atmosphere, but I don't want a really quiet, pin drop one either.

So, is there a hall with a good mix of different people? I reckon that's where I'd fit in best.

Some halls have reputations for attracting people of certain personalities, and it's these reputations that cause the people of that personality to apply there. For example Rootes is well known for having very sociable people hence sociable people apply there and it maintains its reputation.

Also the layout of the corridors tends to have an effect on the atmosphere. Towards the start of the year I had to go in several different buildings and I noticed in Claycroft and possibly Lakeside and Heronbank, the doors are designed so that the room doors have to be kept closed, which obviously leads to a quieter atmosphere. I personally found them a bit too quiet. Whitefields has an unusual layout (like lots of little houses) but I've never been inside.

Many halls have corridors with doors leading directly into the rooms, which is nice as it means you can keep your door open which leads to a nice atmosphere. I lived in Westwood where there were 26 people to a kitchen (there may be more due to people sharing) and that was nice. I saw in Tocil, the corridors are arranged so that each corridor is behind a locked door to minimise theft from other corridors in the building. This problem is biggest in Rootes where the buildings are huge and you can get anywhere in the building once you're inside.

What's most important is that you fill out a form giving your personality and what I found was that they try to keep similar personalities together but not everyone was exactly the same. There was a nice mix of personalities in the halls.
Rootes is great. I go out 1-3 days a week depending what's going on and s'all good. I don't tend to get woken up repeatedly in the night and the whole millions of fire alarms isn't true either, we had 3 in the space of 2 days and that's it in our first.. I dunno 4 weeks? It's a bit pot luck as to your room and what the furniture is like, I'm in a smaller one and have the old furniture.. But in my corridor there's a couple of rooms with brand new furniture that are slightly bigger too, which are really nice.

The only problem we've had so far really that I can comment on is food going missing and the kitchens. We have 2 cookers between 23 of us. 2 fridges, 2 freezers.. Food goes missing quite a bit, I'm rather tempted to try get a mini fridge for my room..
Best location: Whitefields
Best en-suite: Heronbank
Best kitchens: Jack Martin
Best atmosphere: Rootes

Best overall (value): Arthur Vick
